Stevia is a shrub native to Paraguay and Brazil and has been used by the native Guarani Indians for over 1500 years. The Guarani’s used stevia as a natural herbal sweetener to sweeten their bitter drinks such as mate and for medicinal use to treat diabetes and hypertension. It nourishes the pancreas but does not raise normal blood glucose levels, making it safe for diabetics and hypergylcemics. Stevia lowers high blood pressure but does not affect normal blood pressure. Stevia contains an abundance of phytonutrients and trace minerals. The herb also contains no calories or carbohydrates and its antibacterial properties help prevent tooth decay. Stevia is an ideal natural sweetener alternative for sugar and artificial sweeteners such as aspartame. As the herb has no calories or carbohydrates, it acts as a great weight loss aid and digestive aid and helps minimize cravings for sweets, fatty foods and helps with addictions to tobacco and alcohol. Stevia is useful for healing a variety of skin problems. Whole leaf can help soften and tighten the skin and smooth wrinkles. Stevia supreme liquid can be used on acne outbreaks, eczema and lip and mouth sores. Studies show that stevia prevents gum disease and prevents cavities.

The Upper Canada Stevia Company is proud to offer only high quality stevia products. We use only high rebaudioside A content stevia extract in our products. Rebaudioside A is the sweetest and purest part of the leaf. We offer safe, and secure on-line shopping, excellent customer service and guaranteed next business day shipping on all in stock items.
Diabetes Meal Plan from Quality Health

What is a diabetes meal plan?

Diabetes Meal Planner to Help You Maintain Your Ideal Diet. A diabetes meal plan is a guide that tells you how much and what kinds of food you can choose to eat at meals and snack times. A good meal plan should fit in with our schedule and eating habits. The right meal plan will help you improve your blood glucose, blood pressure, and cholesterol numbers and also help keep your weight on track. Whether you need to lose weight or stay where you are, your meal plan can help.

People with diabetes have to take extra care to make sure that their food is balanced with insulin and oral medications, and exercise to help manage their blood glucose levels.

This might sound like a lot of work, but your doctor and/or dietitian can help you create a meal plan that is best for you. When you make healthy food choices, you will improve your overall health and you can even prevent complications such as heart disease, some cancers, and hypertension.

There are many ways to help you follow your diabetes meal plan. Some ways are following the Food Guide Pyramid, Rating your Plate, Exchanges Lists, and Carbohydrate Counting. They are all different but hopefully one is right for you.

What is a healthy diet?

A healthy diet is a way of eating that that reduces risk for complications such as heart disease and stroke. Healthy eating includes eating a wide variety of foods including vegetables, whole grains, fruits, non-fat dairy products, beans, and lean meats, poultry and fish. There is no one perfect food so including a variety of different foods and watching portion sizes is key to a healthy diet. Also, make sure your choices from each food group provide the highest quality nutrients you can find. In other words, pick foods rich in vitamins, minerals and fiber over those that are processed.

People with diabetes can eat the same foods the family enjoys. Everyone benefits from healthy eating so the whole family can take part in healthy eating. It takes some planning but you can fit your favorite foods into your meal plan and still manage your blood glucose, blood pressure and cholesterol.

The Diabetic Food Pyramid

Author: <a target="_blank" title="Arturo" 'href="http://www.articlesbase.com/authors/'arturo/3764">Arturo

There is a Food Pyramid that was created especially for diabetics who need help managing their eating plans in order to keep their blood glucose levels low. There are six different groups on the diabetic food pyramid, which each vary considerably in size. The largest group on the diabetic food pyramid is the grains, starchy vegetables and beans group, and is located on the very bottom of the pyramid. The smallest group is the fats, alcohol and sweets group, and is located at the top of the pyramid. The larger, lower groups require more servings per day, and the smaller, higher groups require significantly less. You should eat as very little from the fats, alcohol and sweets group as you possible can, as the foods that fit into that category are poor choices for a healthy eating plan.

The former Food Guide Pyramid was replaced in April of 2005, providing a new set of tools that is called My Pyramid, and is based on caloric requirements instead.

In order to follow the minimum amount of servings for every group in the diabetic food pyramid, you would be eating approximately 1600 calories per day. At the upper end of the food pyramids caloric range, expect to eat around 2800 calories. Generally it is women who eat on the lower end of the range, with men eating on the middle to high end of the range, depending on their activity level. The number of servings that you need can vary, but generally depends on your personal goals with diabetes, in addition to nutritional and caloric needs, the type of lifestyle that you live, and what foods you actually enjoy eating. You can divide the number of necessary servings among all the various snacks and meals that you consume daily.

The diabetic food pyramid is different from the Food Guide Pyramid put out by the USDA in that it groups foods based on the levels of carbohydrates and proteins, rather than by food classification. Portion sizes also tend to be different, in order to have similar carbohydrate content for each individual serving. Examples of this are cheese, which can be found in the meat group rather than in its typical home in dairy, and potatoes can be found in the starchy foods group rather than with the rest of the vegetables. These differences have been created in order to make the carbohydrate levels approximately equal between each food group.

4 Vital Tips To Better Health With Diabetes

Author: <a target="_blank" title="Julie Wanner Rossetti" 'href="http://www.articlesbase.com/authors/'julie-wanner-rossetti/34260">Julie Wanner Rossetti

Julie Wanner Rossetti knows about how to seize control of her health and how to live a full life, despite being diagnosed with a potentially fatal disease, such as diabetes. She was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at age 13, but rather than feel helpless, sick, or doomed, she embraced a positive attitude and willed herself to better health. She took concrete steps to gain control of her life - and health - as outlined in her book, Diabetes Can Be Sweet...Once You Bury It.

Lose the Label, she suggests, "You have a full life ahead of you no matter what your age is, and diabetes can be made to fit into your daily schedule. It's all up to you, and your diabetes consultant can guide you in the right direction. With a little organization and skill you can do it.

"If you fall down (I have many times), get back up and start again. It's okay to make mistakes and learn from them. What's even more important is that you start over and make the necessary changes. Every decision you make will determine the outcome of how diabetes affects your life. Making no decision is still a decision and a negative one at best. Now is a good time to evaluate the words or colors that you are choosing to use every day. What does your life portrait look like so far? Choose the right words and lose the labels, then you will win!"

1. Establish Your Health Goals For Exercise.
Determine where you want to be as far as your health is concerned. Decide on an exercise program. What's important is that you set a goal to begin with and consistently do the activities so the end result is favorable. Keep a logbook so you can make changes in your daily activities.

2. Regularly Monitor Your Blood Glucose Levels.
In order to be healthy and not feel like you have diabetes, you will need to gain control over your blood glucose levels. Become a pro at blood glucose testing by keeping your blood sugar in the normal range. Many people carry a cell phone. I recommend you carry your blood glucose meter.

3. Eat Well.
Eat right with an individualized meal plan. Eat foods that make you not only healthy, but happy too! Quality is important here. Remember, everything that you put into your body is either a positive or a negative, and yes, that includes all foods. Eat the right foods and you will feel fabulous! You should eat a diet that's based on your blood type, just as Dr. Peter D'Adamo lays out in his book, Diabetes: Fight It With The Blood Type Diet. There are vitamins, supplements, herbs, and food that fit your blood type, rather than consuming those that destroy your body. Your blood type is the main component to your body's entire immune system.

4. Stay Stress-Free!
If you don't get rid of the stress, it will get rid of you. There are lots of natural remedies that you can use. Have your naturopathic physician assist you in what vitamins, supplements, and herbs to take. Laughter, of course, is the best medicine of all. Some stress-busters may include: exercise, prayer, rest, relax on a beach or in a hammock, light some scented candles and take a long bubble bath or go to a spa and order every treatment available, listen to soothing music, and/or watch a funny movie, and keep smiling.

Any information provided in this article is not medical advice and should not be substituted for consulting with your own physician.

Choose the Right Foods to Lower Your Blood Sugar Level

Author: <a target="_blank" title="Julia Hanf" 'href="http://www.articlesbase.com/authors/'julia-hanf/15885">Julia Hanf

Diabetes is a condition that millions of people manage on a daily basis. People with diabetes must be mindful of the foods and beverages they consume. Whether or not you have had natural diabetes all of your life or have been recently diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, it is crucial that you engage in healthy food choices.

The majority of your food selections should be based on a whole foods approach. Whole foods are natural and organic foods. These foods are created with the highest standards and are tailored for people with conditions such as diabetes, gluten intolerance, and other conditions. Seek out whole food and organic supermarkets in your area.

What food choices should people with diabetes make to manage their diabetes glucose levels? First, think back to nature such as vegetables and fruits. Nature has provided a wealth of vegetables to keep your palate enticed. For example, have a spinach salad with broccoli and carrots at dinner.

To control your blood sugar levels you have to monitor your carbohydrate consumption. Breads and pastas can spike your blood sugar, but this can be minimized if you consume whole grain breads and pastas. These are easy to find at a whole foods organic market.

For your entree keep the focus on fish, chicken and turkey. You can consume lean cuts of beef and pork in moderation. Make sure to remove the fatty skin and use healthy liquid oils, such as olive oil, when you cook foods. In addition, stick to non-fat dairy products. You can consume skim milk, non fat cheese, and non fat yogurt.

If you have diabetes you may feel that you have to miss out on the sweet taste of foods. This is not so. You can add cinnamon in moderation to foods to give them a sweet taste. Cinnamon may actually have a positive effect on your blood glucose levels, especially for people with Type 2 diabetes. Therefore, cinnamon is a great way to get the sweet fix you desire.

Lastly, don't forget about what you drink! Beverages can be a roadblock to lowering blood sugar levels. Diabetes treatment should include drinking plenty of water and an occasional diet drink that has zero calories.

There are some foods that you should avoid like the plague. Avoid processed foods such as candy, chips, sodas, fruit punch, and cookies. These contain an excessive amount of sugar and carbohydrates that will have your blood glucose level soaring. Watch out for foods labeled as sugar free as well. This labeling is misleading and they can often raise your blood sugar levels as much as common sugar foods.

Remember that consuming healthy foods is not a free for all. If you eat too much of any type of food you will gain weight. Gaining weight is especially disastrous for people with diabetes. Stick to healthy portions and monitor your caloric intake.

Diabetics may have to spend more time analyzing what they eat and drink, but it is a manageable process. The number of whole food organic supermarkets is on the rise which is a major benefit for people with diabetes. Take advantage of their services to help you control your blood sugar levels and enjoy food at the same time.

Diabetes Mellitus Type 1 – Symptoms, Causes and Treatment

Author: <a target="_blank" title="hardeep" 'href="http://www.articlesbase.com/authors/'hardeep/177927">hardeep

Special areas in the pancreas gland, the islets of Langerhans, produce a hormone called insulin. This hormone is a protein of small size. Insulin stimulates muscle cells and other body cells to take up glucose from the blood and convert the glucose to glycogen, a kind of starch, and then store the glycogen. By need the body cells convert the glycogen to glucose and use it as fuel. In this way insulin keeps the glucose level in the blood at a normal size.

By diabetes type I the cells producing insulin are destroyed. Then less glucose is taken up from the blood into the body cells and utilized there, and glucose accumulates in the blood.

THE CAUSES AND MECHANISMS OF DIABETES TYPE I

The cause of the disease is not well known. An auto-immune response attacking the insulin producing cells in the langerhansian islets may be a cause. Virus infection may be another cause. The disease also is to some extend inherited.

When the glucose uptake into the body cells is reduced, but glucose instead accumulates in the blood, the following physiological effects occur:

-The body cells do not get enough fuel for the work they shall do.

-The molecular thickness (osmality) of the blood increases. This causes water to be pulled out from the body tissues and into the blood. The tissues thus get dried out and the urine production increases.

-The tissues begin to break down protein and fat to get energy, causing weight loss and muscular reduction.

The symptoms of diabetes type 1 are a consequence of these mechanisms.

SYMPTOMS OF DIABETES TYPE 1

The disease often starts suddenly. Often children or young people are attacked by the disease. The lack of insulin causes an increased amount of blood sugar. Early symptoms of the disease are:

-Increased urine production

-Dehydration (lack of water in the body)

-Abnormally high thirst as a consequence of increased urine production

-Dryness in the mouth

-An abnormal high appetite

-Feeling extremely tired and weak

-Weight loss, even when one eats well

-Impaired vision

If the blood sugar level is not stabilized to a normal value, there will be an accumulation of chemicals in the body called ketones, and this condition is called diabetic ketoacidosis. This serious condition can lead to coma and death. The signs of ketoacidosis are:

-Vomiting,

-Pain in the stomach

-Rapid breathing,

-High pulse rate

-Somnolence (abnormal tendency to sleep)

In the long term, diabetes type 1 can severely hurt the blood vessels in vital organs. This can further cause damage to the heart, eyes, kidneys or other body organs.

TREATMENTS OF DIABETES TYPE 1

Diabetes type 1 is treated with insulin injections. Implanting insuline cells in the pancreas is an experimental treatment. Another experimental treatment is to implant stem cells in the pancreas that can develop into new insulin producing cells.

Another important module of the treatment is regulation of the amount of sugar and fat consumed through the diet so that it fits together with the insulin-amount injected. Also regular monitoring of the blood sugar level to regulate the insulin amount is an important part of the treatment.

There are also natural products in the market that can help to normalize the blood sugar level by diabetes type 2. Those products cannot heal the disease or replace insulin injections, but they can help the body to regulate the blood sugar level. These products contain minerals that are working components of enzymes that stimulate the glucose metabolism in the body. They also contain herbs that have been used for a long time in traditional medicine to regulate the glucose level and that have proven their effects in scientific studies.

Discover How to Control and Treat Diabetes - 30 Topics

Author: <a target="_blank" title="Lamar Deane" 'href="http://www.articlesbase.com/authors/'lamar-deane/46632">Lamar Deane

Diabetes is a disease in which the body is unable to properly use the sugar called glucose to fuel our bodies for energy and growth the body needs. Virtually all of the food we consume is broken down into glucose sugar that enters into the bloodstream. The pancreas produces insulin which takes the glucose from the bloodstream into body cells, where it is then used for body fuel. If the pancreas doesn't produce enough insulins or the cells don't use insulin properly, the glucose builds up in the bloodstream while the cells that fuel the body are starved of energy. Overtime, if not treated diabetes can lead to serious health complications such as risk for heart disease, kidney renal disease, blindness, and nerve problems.

There are three types of diabetes. Type 1 and 2 diabetes and gestational
diabetes.

Type 1 diabetes:

Type 1 of diabetes is more serious than type 2 diabetes, in that the pancreas can no longer produce insulin, which control blood sugar (glucose) resulting in having to take insulin shots or other medication for diabetes. Sometimes referred to as juvenile diabetes, type 1 diabetes, although developing most often in children and teenagers, type 1 diabetes can occur at any age. Early diagnosis is crucial in preventing other serious complications brought about by diabetes disease and the effects of diabetes, such as heart disease, chronic kidney disease, being blind, nerve damage, and high blood pressure level. Some symptoms for diabetes are:

* Loss of weight
* Fatique-no energy
* Excessive thirst
* Increase in appetite
* Vision eyesight blurred
* Frequent urinating

Type 2 diabetes:

Type 2 of diabetes is the more common form of diabeties and although there is no cure for type 2 diabetes it can usually be controlled by losing weight and getting rid of excess fat, exercise, and eating healthy foods. Those with type 2 diabetes are able to create insulin; however, the pancreas can't create enough insulin for a healthy blood sugar level or a normal glucose range to enter body cells to be used for self energy. Some of the diabetes risk factors associated with type 2 diabetes are:

* Genetic ancestry: If a parent or sibling has diabetes two the risk is higher for another family member of getting the disease.

* Being overweight

* Type 2 diabetes increases with age 45 and up

* Race or ethnic background. The risk of type 2 diabetes is greater in Africans, Latin Americans, Native Americans and Asians

* Non active. Health and fitness exercise is important for keeping type 2 diabetes under control

* Elevated blood pressure

Gestational diabetes: what is gestational diabetes?

Gestational diabetes, sometimes called glucose intolerance pregnancy, affects women who have high blood glucose levels during pregnancy. Usually, for most women there are no signs of symptoms. Most women are routinely screened between 24 and 28 weeks of pregnancy with a gestational diabetes testing glucose screening test. Screening is usually done by what's known as the oral glucose tolerance test. This test measures blood sugar glucose to see if the body is handling the breaking down of blood sugars. Controlling gestational diabetes consist of diet & nutrition and exercise.

With any one of these diabetes types, controlling diabetes with diet, exercise and keeping blood glucose levels as close to normal as possible is crucial for a diabetic.

Food List with Glycemic Index

Author: <a target="_blank" title="Dr. Ripudaman Singh" 'href="http://www.articlesbase.com/authors/'dr-ripudaman-singh/110490">Dr. Ripudaman Singh

Food List with Glycemic Index

Traditional thinking has told us that complex carbohydrates like rice and potatoes were absorbed slowly, and that simple and refined carbohydrates, like candies and jams resulted in a sharp rise in blood sugar. However recent research has indicated that this is not necessarily the case. There are more factors involved than just simple vs complex or refined vs natural.

The GI values are a measure of 1 to 100 where pure glucose has a value of 100. Many carbohydrate-rich foods have been tested and applied against the index. A value of 50 (for example) indicates that the food has an effect on blood sugar equal to half that of glucose.

The Glycemic Index (GI) measures the effect of foods on your blood sugar levels. Eating foods with a high glycemic index value will raise the blood sugar level more dramatically than foods with a low glycemic index value.

Glycemic Index Food List

LOW GI (< 55)

Low GI eating: A guide to forming your own low GI eating habits.

Choose Basmati rice instead of normal rice.

New potatoes have a lower GI than older potatoes. Sweet potatoes also have a low GI.

Unrefined cereals such as oats or muesli are lower in GI than processed cereals.

Bread with lots of grains and seeds are lower in GI than other breads.

When eating biscuits and crackers, those with whole grains in them are lower in GI.

Cakes and muffins made with fruit, oats, and seeds can supply more low-GI ingredients.

Fruits - Stone fruit (peaches, nectarines), apples, citrus are lower in GI than tropical fruits such as bananas, melons, pineapple, etc.

How To Access Medicare Diabetic Supplies At A Cheaper Cost

Author: <a target="_blank" title="Renata Nyleve" 'href="http://www.articlesbase.com/authors/'renata-nyleve/286616">Renata Nyleve

Diabetes is a medical state in which one’s body has a reduced reaction to insulin.

Every person suffering form diabetes needs diabetes supplies to help control, check or even relieve the symptoms related with the condition. The supplies are, however, not cheap to get.

Renata Nyleve Editor of the "Free Diabetic Testing Supplies" website -- http://www.FreeDiabeticTestingSupplies.net -- pointed out;

“…The Medicare Group offers its supplies at a discounted rate for all patients considered to be eligible. It does not include any extra charges including shipment charges. The supplies are brought at one’s doorstep at an affordable cost. One should not hesitate to seek for these discounted supplies to help them in coping with the disease…”

If one suspects to be at risk of getting diabetes and are registered with Medicare, they can freely perform a blood sugar test. The following are some of the tell signs that one has diabetes; high blood pressure, abnormal cholesterol and triglyceride levels, or even history of high blood pressure.

After one knows they have diabetes they can access the following Medicare diabetes products after meeting the following requirements. They need to have a doctor’s directive showing that they have been diagnosed with diabetes. It should also show the number of lancets and test strips they require per month, whether they will be using insulin and how often they will be testing the blood sugar level. It should also show if they require therapeutics shoes and shoes inserts.

Lancets these are sharp pointed needles used to get samples of blood. There are a variety of them; some have caps while others have special features like laser skin perforators. The blood taken is put at the edge of the test strip and a blood glucose monitor is used to read the strip.

“…For one to be able to access the Medicare diabetes kits he should first register with $100. This is after one’s claims that they require diabetic prescriptions has been accepted. Medicare also offers training programs on care and management to its members. It also has a once-a-year diabetes screening campaign…” added R. Nyleve.

Celebs with Type 2 Diabetes: Randy Jackson

Author: <a target="_blank" title="Dr Christopher Segler" 'href="http://www.articlesbase.com/authors/'dr-christopher-segler/92570">Dr Christopher Segler

Randy Jackson, famous for being a judge on American Idol and for producing such artists as Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey, found out that he had type 2 diabetes in 2001. At the time, he was 45 years old and weighed 360 lbs. "I was in the worst shape of my life," recalls Jackson. For weeks, Randy had been feeling tired, thirsty, and overheated. His father was diabetic and took insulin shots, but Jackson put off a trip to the doctor, thinking that he just had a cold instead. Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes. In type 2 diabetes, the body either does not produce enough insulin or the cells ignore the insulin.

"I was feeling really ill over a couple days, thought I had a cold, was running a high fever. I finally went to the doctor and they said, 'Guess what? You have type 2 diabetes.' It ran in my family and all this, so it was a little hereditary for me, but also it was not healthy living, eating, anything, exercise that I was doing, and I was really heavy at that time," says Jackson.

"You don't think it's going to happen to you," he said.

If you are overweight, it doesn't necessarily mean you will become a diabetic. However, being obese and not exercizing can contribute to the development of type 2 diabetes.. Diabetics either produce too little insulin or their cells ignore it, a condition called "insulin resistance." Insulin takes glucose, broken down from the sugars and starches we eat, from the blood into the cells. Glucose simply builds up in the blood instead of feeding the cells energy without it.

Most diabetics develop a resistance to insulin as adults. This makes type 2 diabetes the more common of the two different types. Doctors still don't understand why diabetics' cells are no longer able to use insulin properly.

The pancreas gradually becomes unable to produce more insulin as the need grows. The immediate effects are fatigue and dizziness, but over time high blood-glucose levels can cause damage to the eyes, kidneys, nerves and heart. Without proper care, diabetics are at risk for heart attacks, blindness and foot amputations. There are about 86,000 diabetes-related amputations annually in the United States, according to the Johns Hopkins Hospital. The number one killer of type 2 diabetics is heart disease.

An estimated 20.Eight million Americans now have diabetes. Only five to ten percent of those have type 1. Of those, doctors estimate 6.2 million haven't been diagnosed. Another 54 million Americans have "prediabetic" elevated blood-glucose levels. (Check out your own risk by taking the test at diabetes.org.)

When Randy Jackson was diagnosed with diabetes, he had gastric bypass surgery and lost 110 lbs.

"It really helped to get the disease to a manageable level for me so I could just go on medication," Jackson said.

Jackson is now the spokesperson for the American Heart association's campaign. He is hoping that he can raise awareness because he says that a third of the people who have the disease do not even know it.

Here are some tips from Randy Jackson on how to deal with type 2 diabetes: - Keep active and maintain a healthy lifestyle with a healthy body weight.

"I learned to love the treadmill," Randy admits. "I hated it before, but I really love it because of my busy lifestyle. It's something I can always do, jump on the treadmill for 45 minutes." - Go to the doctor.

"Definitely consult your doctor and have regular visits," Jackson said. "Men are really bad about going to the doctor. You should go about four times a year at least. And normalize your blood sugar. Check it all the time and try to eat a balanced diet."

Jackson says he was an emotional eater and, especially coming from the South where fattening comfort food abounds, it was difficult for him to change his habits.

"It's trying to get sensible about that. Moderation is the key to dieting. Too much of anything is going to be terrible for you," he said.
