Food Guide Pyramid

Author: <a target="_blank" title="Krishan Bakhru" 'href="http://www.articlesbase.com/authors/'krishan-bakhru/11438">Krishan Bakhru

You've heard about it when you were in school, but you really didn't pay too much attention to it. There's been some talk about it recently but again you just didn't have the time to give your full attention to it. Now however, you have enough time on your hands, and besides your kids need help with their schoolwork so you'll need to learn all about it. What am I talking about? The Food Guide Pyramid of course.

Sometime late in the early mists of science some genius or early nutritionist stumbled across the magical fact that humans needed food to live. This same person also deduced quite rightly that some foods were more important than others. And taking things one step further, this genius saw that even from amongst these categories the foods would again be divided into sections where some of these foods should only be taken in smaller quantities.

At a guess this person probably came up with a complex table or matrix from which to describe the proper daily intake of food for a person in the course of one day. But as will happen, through some method we have instead ended up not with a table or matrix but with the Food Guide Pyramid that graces all doctors' offices these days.

Well, now you know what the food guide pyramid is, but do you know exactly what it does, and how it works? In the earlier days as little back as five years ago, the food guide pyramid was set in an orderly manner, with the foods that should be consumed most placed on the bottom, and the foods that should be eaten the least placed on the tip of the food guide pyramid.

As of 2005 however, the food guide pyramid as we know it was changed forever, and a new one was built to take its place. Essentially this new food guide pyramid tells you the same story, but it now has added components to be able to help you better understand diet and your health.

This new food guide pyramid actually has a person climbing stairs up the side of the pyramid to show that regular exercise also needs to be included in your overall healthy eating habits. And instead of the horizontal lines that we are so used to seeing, the divisions now radiate down from the tip of the food guide pyramid. What this tells us is that although some food groups are better for us than others, some foods even within a group should only be taken in moderation.

You'll also notice that this new food guide pyramid sports a dazzling array of rainbow colors as its divisional stripes, and that's just to make the sections easier to differentiate. With six colored divisions you'll go through Orange (Grains), Green (Vegetables), Red (Fruits), Yellow (Fats), Blue (Dairy), and Purple (Meats, Beans, Fish). Take a walk through this new food guide pyramid you might be pleasantly surprised what you find inside.

How to Safely Cheat on Your Diet

Author: <a target="_blank" title="Kelliann Bateman" 'href="http://www.articlesbase.com/authors/'kelliann-bateman/129721">Kelliann Bateman

There are many ways of cheating on a diet and many different types of diet cheaters. Which one holds you back?

Inadvertent Cheater

Blatant/Lazy Cheater

Well-intended Cheater

Oblivious Cheater

The Intentional/Controlled Cheater

The Inadvertent Cheater thinks that they are eating healthy when they really are not. For example, they may buy a cereal that is marketed as a high-fiber, bran cereal, and while that may be true, it also contains more sugar than the "Cocoa Choo-Choos" marketed to kids. They may forego soda for juice—and although the juice is a better choice—it too contains high amounts of sugar or fructose. Make sure you are checking labels. Just because it is marketed as a health food—doesn't mean that it is.

The Blatant/Lazy Cheater is another story; they befriend procrastination. They figure that they already ate the Oreo when they were making the kid's lunches so…they may as well wait and start that diet tomorrow—and proceed to eat the whole bag of Oreos. Tomorrow never comes.

The Well-intended Cheater does pretty well most of the time. Their set-back happens when they have eaten a clean diet during the first part of the day and so they figure that the pizza for lunch won't hurt—especially since they plan to have a salad for dinner. They stick to their plan and eat the salad for dinner; however, the salad comes with high calorie dressing, which they smother the salad with.

The Oblivious Cheater is the taste-tester. They don't mean to cheat; however, they take a little bite of the macaroni and cheese they are making for lunch to ensure it is not too hot for little Joey. Later in the afternoon, little Joey wants to go to the park, but it is raining—so they head to the neighborhood fast-food joint that sports a Play Place—where they feel obligated to buy the Happy Meal. While little Joey is busy playing, they figure a couple of those fries won't hurt, and a bite or two of those chicken nuggets are probably okay—they do have protein—and they hate to see it go to waste. Later when fixing dinner, just a little sample to make sure it isn't too salty. When cleaning up, they take just a small piece of the bread that Little Joey didn't even touch. All those little bites?—they add up to big calories at the end of the day—and take a big bite out of reaching your fitness goals.

The Intentional/Controlled Cheater is the only form of cheating that is legal and won't keep you from attaining your fitness goals. This is the category that I fall under. I do not always eat perfect—that being said—I try to keep a clean diet almost all the time.

At our house, Saturday night is movie night. It is the one time during the week I break the no food in the living room rule. It is also the one day of the week I get to legally cheat on my clean diet rules. We go shopping for movie night treats, which consists of popcorn, candy, and we usually order a pizza complete with breadsticks and Buffalo wings. We get mounds of blankets and pillows and picnic in the living room. I look forward to this time with my family all week. I wouldn't give it up for anything. The rest of the time we—even the kids—make a conscience effort to be as healthy as we can.

I also break the clean diet rules for my children's birthday parties—I will NOT forego a piece of birthday cake in celebration of my child's life—NO WAY! If we go to a BBQ or somebody invites us out, I will munch on a few chips and eat the hamburger— I don't want to be rude. You will never see me eating just a salad on my wedding anniversary, nor will I refuse to eat a homemade chocolate chip cookie on Christmas Eve with my children. To me, these are the celebrations that are the building blocks of a happy life—kind of like protein is to muscle. I don't consider it cheating; I consider it the precious moments in life.

So what can/should you do?

Take the time to read labels. Check content for extra sugar, fructose syrup, sodium, and high levels of "bad" fat (sat/trans look instead for foods with omega 3 fats). Try to avoid packaged processed foods altogether when possible and opt instead for fresh foods or foods you prepare at home.

Quit procrastinating—there is no time like today. An old Chinese proverb states that "The best day to plant a tree was twenty years ago, the second best day is today."

Remember that getting fit is a lifestyle. Although there will be times when a piece of cake is appropriate—reserve those for special occasions or one night a week you have set aside as a "treat-night." It is important though that even special occasions and "treat-night" require some moderation. Indulge a little--but don't binge.

Often we don't realize all the extra calories we eat without even thinking about it. For one week, carry a sandwich bag with you on a daily basis. Every time you are about to sample the macaroni and cheese, the dinner you are preparing, a single Fruit Loop, French fry, or chicken nugget, put it in the sandwich bag instead of your mouth. You will be surprised how quickly it can fill up. Consider the calories you have saved at the end of the week.

When you do have a legitimate reason you are cheating, such as special celebrations or a predetermined night that is set aside, keep it within reason. You can have pizza with the kids, but you don't have to eat an entire large pizza by yourself. Pick a treat such as a dark chocolate candy bar (filled with antioxidants) but don't eat the entire bag of Cheetos (it is also not necessary to sample every movie treat that your kids have).

Benefits Of A Diabetes Meal Plan

Author: <a target="_blank" title="Alice Saracho" 'href="http://www.articlesbase.com/authors/'alice-saracho/126089">Alice Saracho

Diet has a great influence on your odds of developing diabetes. As proof, the number of cases of diabetes diagnosed in a country is very closely correlated with the percentage of people that are obese in that country. Further proof is reflected by the fact that people over the world in countries with relatively low rates of diabetes who migrate here and adopt our eating habits suddenly find that they begin to develop diabetes at approximately the same rate as we do. All of this serves to highlight the fact that, as a culture, Americans tend to have poor eating habits.

For those with diabetes, diet is even more important. It is imperative that they adopt a sensible diabetes meal plan in order to prevent their disease from getting worse. To do that, they have to start to take greater interest in the foods that they eat. A good diabetes meal plan focuses primarily on number of calories in the meal and the percentage of carbohydrates and attempts to keep both of these numbers on the low side.

Many diabetes food plans use an exchange plan to make it easier for the person to follow the diet. In a food plan, foods that are similar are grouped together. At each meal, the person is allowed to take a certain number of portions from each food group. And, within a particular food group, they are allowed to exchange a portion of any one food for any other food. In such a diabetes meal plan, there are 7 groups. They are starches, meats, fruits, milks, vegetables, fats, and carbohydrates (other than bread). An exchange plan gives you a lot of flexibility in planning your diet.

If you have trouble coming up with your own exchange plan, there are many recipe sites on the Internet that can help you out. In just about every city there are also registered dietitians that can help you choose the perfect food plan for yourself.

As a diabetic, before you make any drastic changes to your diet, however, you should consult with your doctor or health professional. You want to be sure that certain foods aren't interfering with any drugs that your doctor may have prescribed. You also want to be sure that the diet changes you are planning to make are nutritionally safe. It's also possible that your doctor, while he may have no objection to your new diet, may still want to monitor you for blood sugar changes, weight gains, or other changes that occur to your body after you have begun your new diet regime.

A good diabetes meal plan will help you to keep your blood glucose levels within controllable ranges. It will also ensure that you have a good balance of fats, proteins, and carbohydrates in your diet. In fact, a good diabetes meal plan is even good for those that don't have the disease.

The main thing with diets is that they have to be practical - to you. They have to be plans that you can comfortably commit to. If you can't, then odds are that you won't stay on it very long.

Diabetes and Raw Food

Author: <a target="_blank" title="Jonathan Heusman" 'href="http://www.articlesbase.com/authors/'jonathan-heusman/9375">Jonathan Heusman

Diabetes is a disease that effects millions of people in the U.S. alone. A simplified definition of diabetes is when your body does not produce enough insulin to properly use the right kind of sugar into your bloodstream. This can have devastating effects on the body, as the cells do not get all of the fuel they need for energy and growth. There is no question that it is widespread. Unfortunately, there are many people who have a form of diabetes, but have yet to be diagnosed.

While all of the causes of diabetes are not fully understood, eating raw foods helps to reduce some of the currently known risk factors. Therefore, it makes sense to choose a diet of raw foods whether you have been diagnosed or not.

Dietary needs of diabetics

Diabetics still require the same levels of nutrition as everyone else, maybe even more so. Nutrition is one of the most important elements for controlling diabetes properly. As you will see, following a raw food menu will fit in with diabetic nutritional recommendations. Here are some basic tips on eating right.

Choose a wide variety of fruits and vegetables. (Diabetics may need to limit starchy vegetables)

Avoid processed grains such as white flour, and white rice. Opt for whole grains instead.

Add lentils and beans (like pinto, garbanzo, or kidney beans) to your diet.

Eat fish a few times a week.

Consume non-fat dairy products.

Reduce high-calorie snacks and like cake, cookies, chips, and ice cream.

Raw foods for diabetes

Most of these recommendations fit in well with the raw food lifestyle. The main difference is that the food would not be cooked, as raw foodists eat raw, uncooked, unprocessed and organic food. Fish and dairy products may or may not be a part of your raw foods diet. People that eat raw foods are already reducing their risk for disease, including diabetes.

If you have diabetes and are thinking about a raw foods program, you can see how it is an ideal choice. A raw food diet helps those with diabetes by sticking to the current dietary guidelines. But there is more to it than that. The reason raw foodists do eat uncooked food is because all of the naturally occurring enzymes. These enzymes promote optimum health and digestion. So, not only are you eating healthy, but your body is getting full use of the nutrients present in your food.

Diabetes is a serious disease, so be sure to check with doctor before switching to raw foods. Take some time to explain what the raw foods diet is all about. Chances are your doctor will be very pleased and encourage you to move forward. Be sure to continue monitoring your blood sugar level according to your doctors instructions. Some diabetics eating raw foods have seen remarkable improvements in their condition. Maybe you could be one of them.

Author: <a target="_blank" title="Lamar Deane" 'href="http://www.articlesbase.com/authors/'lamar-deane/46632">Lamar Deane

Diabetes is a disease in which the body is unable to properly use the sugar called glucose to fuel our bodies for energy and growth the body needs. Virtually all of the food we consume is broken down into glucose sugar that enters into the bloodstream. The pancreas produces insulin which takes the glucose from the bloodstream into body cells, where it is then used for body fuel. If the pancreas doesn't produce enough insulins or the cells don't use insulin properly, the glucose builds up in the bloodstream while the cells that fuel the body are starved of energy. Overtime, if not treated diabetes can lead to serious health complications such as risk for heart disease, kidney renal disease, blindness, and nerve problems.

There are three types of diabetes. Type 1 and 2 diabetes and gestational
diabetes.

Type 1 diabetes:

Type 1 of diabetes is more serious than type 2 diabetes, in that the pancreas can no longer produce insulin, which control blood sugar (glucose) resulting in having to take insulin shots or other medication for diabetes. Sometimes referred to as juvenile diabetes, type 1 diabetes, although developing most often in children and teenagers, type 1 diabetes can occur at any age. Early diagnosis is crucial in preventing other serious complications brought about by diabetes disease and the effects of diabetes, such as heart disease, chronic kidney disease, being blind, nerve damage, and high blood pressure level. Some symptoms for diabetes are:

* Loss of weight
* Fatique-no energy
* Excessive thirst
* Increase in appetite
* Vision eyesight blurred
* Frequent urinating

Type 2 diabetes:

Type 2 of diabetes is the more common form of diabeties and although there is no cure for type 2 diabetes it can usually be controlled by losing weight and getting rid of excess fat, exercise, and eating healthy foods. Those with type 2 diabetes are able to create insulin; however, the pancreas can't create enough insulin for a healthy blood sugar level or a normal glucose range to enter body cells to be used for self energy. Some of the diabetes risk factors associated with type 2 diabetes are:

* Genetic ancestry: If a parent or sibling has diabetes two the risk is higher for another family member of getting the disease.

* Being overweight

* Type 2 diabetes increases with age 45 and up

* Race or ethnic background. The risk of type 2 diabetes is greater in Africans, Latin Americans, Native Americans and Asians

* Non active. Health and fitness exercise is important for keeping type 2 diabetes under control

* Elevated blood pressure

Gestational diabetes: what is gestational diabetes?

Gestational diabetes, sometimes called glucose intolerance pregnancy, affects women who have high blood glucose levels during pregnancy. Usually, for most women there are no signs of symptoms. Most women are routinely screened between 24 and 28 weeks of pregnancy with a gestational diabetes testing glucose screening test. Screening is usually done by what's known as the oral glucose tolerance test. This test measures blood sugar glucose to see if the body is handling the breaking down of blood sugars. Controlling gestational diabetes consist of diet & nutrition and exercise.

With any one of these diabetes types, controlling diabetes with diet, exercise and keeping blood glucose levels as close to normal as possible is crucial for a diabetic.

Top 5 Diabetes Diet Tips for Creating Healthy Meal Plan

Author: <a target="_blank" title="Nishanth Reddy" 'href="http://www.articlesbase.com/authors/'nishanth-reddy/9250">Nishanth Reddy

Diet plays a key role in controlling your blood sugar. A healthy-eating plan tailored to your needs will do that and more. Majority of people affected with diabetes are overweight or obese. In fact, your risk of getting diabetes increases the more weight you put on.

So controlling your diet can be the key to reducing the risk of diabetes as well as improving your symptoms if you are already affected by this disease people often refer to as "the silent killer."

Everybody knows that maintaining a good diet is a healthy choice for every person. But for diabetes patients, this statement means something more significant than the recent fad over healthy living.

For diabetes patients, having a healthy diet means eating in a way that reduces the risk for complications that are commonly associated with their conditions, including heart disease and stroke. For them, a healthy diet could mean the difference between die-abetes and live-abetes.

Eating healthy involves eating a wide variety of foods that encompasses the whole diet spectrum of vegetables, whole grains, fruits, non-fat dairy products, beans, lean meats, poultry, and fish.

No, you do not have to eat all of that, but a little bit of this and that enough to balance the three basic food groups (Go, Grow, and Glow) is what you should aim for.

Tip #1: Preparing a Meal Plan

When you go on a diabetes diet, the first things you need to do is to prepare a meal plan. This will serve as your guide to how much and what kinds of food you can choose to eat at meals, and even at snack times if you wish to include that.

Now, be sure that your meal plan fits in with your schedule and eating habits. That way you will not be likely to ruin your diet simply because your work schedule conflicts with your meal schedule.

Keep in mind your end-goal: To keep your blood glucose in levels that are easy enough to maintain.

In addition to that somewhat myopic diet goal for diabetes, you also want to follow a meal plan that will help you improve your blood pressure and cholesterol levels as well as keep your weight on track.

All these - blood pressure, cholesterol and weight - are factors that contribute to the worsening of your diabetes symptoms, so controlling them could very well mean controlling your diabetes.

When preparing a meal plan, be sure to balance uptake and down take - that is, food and exercise, respectively. Additionally, your doctor may have prescribed you with insulin or oral medications to help you manage your condition.

Take those medications into account as well when you plan your meal plan, making sure that the food is balanced with the drugs. The whole thing sounds like it's a lot of work but with a few suggestions from your physician and/or dietician you can start building a meal plan that is best for you and your condition.

Tip #2: Use the Diabetes Food Pyramid

The Diabetes Food Pyramid, released by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) is composed of six food groups (arranged according to how much you should eat from the least to the most and based on carbohydrate and protein content):

• Fats, sweets, and alcohol
• Milk
• Meat, meat substitutes, and other proteins
• Fruits
• Vegetables
• Grains, beans, and starchy vegetables

Fats, sweets, and alcohol are the one food group that diabetes patients should avoid.

The problem with diabetes involves a certain malfunction in the way our bodies make use of glucose in the blood. It is either there is too much glucose in our blood because we ate too much food rich in sugar so that the hormone responsible for regulating glucose - insulin - is unable to cope. Or, our cells are defective so that even though we have enough insulin to handle the job, our cells do not respond.

In order to control the levels of glucose in the blood stream, controlling diabetes diet is important. The intake of fats, sweets, and alcohol and other generally "unhealthy" foods should be minimized and only for special treats.

As for the rest of the food groups, here are the serving sizes recommended by the American Diabetes Association:

• Meat and Meat Substitutes: 4-6 oz. per day and divided between meals. This is equivalent to ¼ cup cottage cheese, 1 egg, 1 tbsp peanut butter, or ½ cup tofu.
• Milk: 2-3 servings per day
• Fruit: 2-4 servings per day
• Vegetables: 3-5 servings per day
• Grains and Starches: 6-11 servings per day, equivalent to 1 slice of bread, ¼ of a bagel, or ½ of an English muffin or pita bread.

Use this Diabetes Food Pyramid only as a guide in planning your meals. If you want a more individualized option, consult your dietician.

Tip #3: Draw Lines on Your Plate

Another good way to ensure that you are eating a balanced diet is to draw a line across your plate. It could only be an imaginary line. As you sit there for a meal, the exercise might even prove to be fun.

The first step, of course, is to imagine that you are drawing a line through the center of your plate. Then, divide one of the halves into two.

Then, fill this section with grains or starchy foods, such as rice, pasta, potatoes, corn, or peas.

The other section should comprise your meat and meat substitute group - meat, fish, poultry, or tofu.

Next, fill half of your plate with non-starchy vegetables. You can place there broccoli, carrots, cucumbers, salad, tomatoes, and cauliflower.

Last, add a glass of milk and a small piece of roll, and eh voila! You are ready to eat.

Tip #4: Reading Food Labels

With food labels, it all comes down to the Nutrition Facts. It's that list of nutrition information found on the package of foods sold in the grocery store. Reading food labels can help you make wise choices about the foods you buy. The labels will tell you what ingredients were used, the amount of calories, and other pertinent information essential to a diabetes patient.

For instance, a typical food label would contain the total amounts per serving for the following nutrients:

• Calories
• Total fat
• Saturated fat
• Cholesterol
• Sodium
• Total carbohydrate
• Fiber

Use the nutrition facts found in food labels to compare similar types of foods and buy the one that contains fewer calories, lower fats, cholesterol, etc.

Pay close attention to free foods like sugar-free gelatin desert, sugar-free ice pops, sugarless gum, diet soft drinks, and sugar-free syrups. Just because they are called "free" does not mean they are entirely free of calories so don't be overconfident. Instead, read the label. Most free foods should have less than 20 calories and 5 grams of carbohydrates per serving.

Another thing, "no-sugar added" means no sugar was added during the manufacture and packaging of the foods. The ingredients do not include sugar. However, the food may be high in carbohydrates still so be sure to read the label carefully.

Fat-free foods could still mean that they contain lots of carbohydrates. Often, they contain almost the same amount of calories as the foods they replace so be sure to pay attention to the label. Buying fat-free foods instead of regular foods does not necessarily mean that you are making a wise choice.

Tip #5: A Word about Sweets
Now, you know that sweets are generally discouraged among diabetes patients. However, having diabetes does not necessarily mean that you cannot have sweets. Imagine how bad life can be for the sweet tooth with diabetes. But as long as you keep your intake of sweets in moderation, there is no reason you have to eschew sugar from your life forever. After all, glucose (sugar) is still the most basic source of energy that the body needs.

So sweeten your foods with these following options:

• Sugar and other sweeteners with calories: honey, brown sugar, molasses, fructose, cane sugar, and confectioners sugar

• Reduced calorie sweeteners: erythritol, hydrogenated starch hydrolysates, isomalt, lactitol, maltitol, mannitol, sorbitol, and xylitol

• Low calories sweeteners: ascelfume potassium, aspartame, saccharin, and sucralose

Research has overturned the long standing belief that sugar caused diabetes. The new studies show us that sugar has in fact the same effect on blood glucose levels as other carbohydrates like bread and potatoes. Based on this discovery, experts agree that a diabetic can now consume sugar as long as they incorporate it into their meal plan the way they would with any ordinary carbohydrate-containing foods.
Now that you have been pointed to the right direction with these tips to improve your diabetes diet, you can go ahead and live a healthier, fuller life where nothing - no carb nor sweets - is denied you, as long as you keep it all in moderation.

33 How do I know when I should see a registered dietitian?

See a registered dietitian (RD) when your diabetes is first diagnosed, when a new doctor changes your treatment plan, or twice a year for a routine review of your meal plan and goals. See the RD more often if:

• You want to improve diabetes control.

• You experience lifestyle or schedule changes, such as a new job, marriage, or pregnancy.

• Your nutritional needs keep changing (this is true for children).

• You've begun an exercise program or had a change in diabetes medication.

• You feel bored, frustrated, or unmotivated to use your meal plan.

• You have unexplained high and low blood-sugar levels.

• You're concerned about weight or blood-fat levels.

• You've developed nutrition-related complications, such as high blood pressure or kidney disease.

We recommend having an RD on your diabetes team. Ask your doctor or hospital for a referral. You can call the American Diabetes Association (800-DIABETES), The American Dietetic Association (800-877-1600), or the American Association of Diabetes Educators (800-TEAM-UP-4) for referrals. Many RDs are certified diabetes educators (CDEs) and have additional training in diabetes care.

3. Exercise research and its benefit for diabetes have shown the following:

a. Exercise will reduce insulin resistance

b. Ward off diabetes complications

c. Help lose weight

d. Help maintain a steady blood sugar level for life

Facts About Diabetes and Diet!

Author: <a target="_blank" title="Jeremy Parker" 'href="http://www.articlesbase.com/authors/'jeremy-parker/14479">Jeremy Parker

Most diabetics already know that there is some confusion concerning the most appropriate diet for the diabetic. They also know there is no single dietary program that fits all people.

This problem only gets worse as there is conflicting dietary advice from so-called experts in this field. As well, the media often reports incomplete information from medical papers, which only adds to the confusion.

It is true that refined white sugar and products containing it are not helpful for the diabetic because of the instantaneous absorption of this substance into the blood as glucose. But there is more to a diet than just sugar considerations.

Some claims have been made of type 2 diabetes being cured through diet alone. The diabetic associations worldwide, however, are resolute that no cure for diabetes exists today. There is no diet to prevent type 2 diabetes!

Pritikin Diet

Christian Roberts of the University of California undertook research into diet and diabetes and found that in 50% of those who followed a diet based on Pritikin principles, the type 2 diabetes symptoms were reversed. Managing type 2 diabetes with a low carb diet could work very well.

The regime for this study had participants exercising for one hour every day. They were also given a diet that was based on vegetables and whole grains with a only little animal protein eaten.

Another small study in the USA concluded that high fibre diets assisted in keeping blood glucose levels low.

Low Fat, Carbohydrate-based Diet

There is controversy over the dietary recommendations being offered by the diabetic associations both in the UK and the US. Their current advice is for diabetics to follow a low fat, carbohydrate-based diet despite what appears to be fairly compelling evidence to the contrary.

The problem in deciding what represents a safe diet, whether for diabetics or not, is in knowing which research to trust. Most research has an agenda. It may be that the research is being sponsored by a drug company to prove the benefits of a particular drug treatment. It may be that the research is undertaken by someone who is simply setting out to prove a theory. There is too little research that is truly independent and undertaken without prejudice to the outcome.

Atkins-type Diet

It has been recommended that an Atkins-type diet, high in fat and protein and low in carbohydrate, is the most suitable for a diabetic. It would certainly seem logical that restricting carbohydrates would help to prevent elevated glucose levels in the blood stream. There could well be consistency between low blood sugar and the Atkins diet. Proponents of the Atkins diet claim that cholesterol levels are not adversely affected by this diet regime. Of course there are contrary views.

Diabetics should understand that each person has his own individual metabolism and physiology. What may be a healthy diet for one person might very well be life threatening for another. Diets for type 1 diabetes should never me mixed with diet plans for type 2 diabetes.

A diet centered around healthy proteins such as white meat and fish, vegetables, natural carbohydrates, salads and fruit as well as monounsaturated fat supplemented by the essential fatty acids is a good starting point. Once this is established there is no reason why, under controlled conditions, individuals should not try introducing whole grains to see what effect they have on their glucose levels. In this way diabetics can evaluate for themselves what represents a healthy diet.
