The Right Diet

The right diet for you in this case includes fruits and vegetables and whole grains. As much as possible you must refrain from eating foods that are high in fat and low in essential nutrients. It is also recommended to eat at least six meals a day.

Exercise

Regular exercise is to be encouraged as this can prevent weight gain which can trigger or worsen complications. If it's okay with your doctor, engaging in aerobic exercises is a good way of regulating blood sugar levels.

Medications

For some women, eating the right foods and exercising are enough to maintain normal blood sugar levels, but for others, they need insulin injections, along with diet and exercise.

Close monitoring is very important in this case; your diabetologist may even advise you to use a special device to monitor your blood sugar levels throughout the day. Your doctor, too, will monitor the development of your baby. He may request for ultrasounds and run other tests to make sure that the baby is coping well.

Although this type of diabetes usually goes away after the baby is born, mothers are at greater risk of developing type II diabetes later in life. That is why monitoring of blood sugar levels, as well as eating the right foods and engaging in regular
exercise, will prove to be of great value to a woman with gestational diabetes.

Lose the Fat Diabetic Diet and Exercise Plan

Back in March of 2005 the results of the Diabetes Prevention Program were released by the American Diabetes Association. This study was conducted nationwide at 25 medical centers and tracked thousands of potential diabetics who were given a lose the fat diabetic diet and exercise plan. Everyone in the study group was pre-diabetic, meaning they all suffered from high blood sugar levels that were higher then normal but not in the diabetic range. Half of all people diagnosed with pre-diabetes will eventually become type 2 diabetics if left untreated.

There were two groups of people is this study. One half of the participants were given only dietary recommendations to follow. The other half were given the same diet but were also asked to exercise 5 times a week for at least 30 minutes per day.

The results of this study were unexpected. Those pre-diabetics who exercised along with following the diabetic diet reduced by 58% their risk of developing diabetes. The reason for this was simple; they lost weight because of these lifestyle changes. Researchers found that exercising and losing weight had the direct effect of lowering blood sugar levels to normal, which wasn't thought to be possible.

It is thought that weight loss for those with pre-diabetes helps prevent the onset of diabetes but it also helps to reverse the damage to insulin producing cells caused by obesity. Depending on how much you weigh it was found that losing 5% to 7% of your body weight can make a difference.

The key to this diet is eating healthy foods that not help the pre-diabetic lose weight but also keep the weight off. The American Diabetes Association recommends a daily diet that consists of the following.

* Grain - 6-11 servings per day (Bread, Cereal, Rice, Pasta)
* Vegetables - 3-5 servings per day
* Fruits - 2-4 servings per day
* Milk - 2-3 servings per day
* Meat - 4-6 ounces per day (Meat, eggs, fish, dried beans, nuts and peanut butter)
* Fats, Sweets, Alcohol - Occasional treats

Not only is this diet recommended for diabetes but it is also endorsed by the American Heart Association to help combat the risks for heart disease. This points out how important it is to eat healthy and follow a fat loss diabetic diet and exercise program.

How to Safely Cheat on Your Diet

There are many ways of cheating on a diet and many different types of diet cheaters.  Which one holds you back?

  • Inadvertent Cheater
  • Blatant/Lazy Cheater
  • Well-intended Cheater
  • Oblivious Cheater
  • The Intentional/Controlled Cheater

The Inadvertent Cheater thinks that they are eating healthy when they really are not.  For example, they may buy a cereal that is marketed as a high-fiber, bran cereal, and while that may be true, it also contains more sugar than the "Cocoa Choo-Choos" marketed to kids.  They may forego soda for juice—and although the juice is a better choice—it too contains high amounts of sugar or fructose.   Make sure you are checking labels.  Just because it is marketed as a health food—doesn't mean that it is.

The Blatant/Lazy Cheater is another story; they befriend procrastination.  They figure that they already ate the Oreo when they were making the kid's lunches so…they may as well wait and start that diet tomorrow—and proceed to eat the whole bag of Oreos.   Tomorrow never comes.

The Well-intended Cheater does pretty well most of the time.  Their set-back happens when they have eaten a clean diet during the first part of the day and so they figure that the pizza for lunch won't hurt—especially since they plan to have a salad for dinner.  They stick to their plan and eat the salad for dinner; however, the salad comes with high calorie dressing, which they smother the salad with.

The Oblivious Cheater is the taste-tester.  They don't mean to cheat; however, they take a little bite of the macaroni and cheese they are making for lunch to ensure it is not too hot for little Joey.  Later in the afternoon, little Joey wants to go to the park, but it is raining—so they head to the neighborhood fast-food joint that sports a Play Place—where they feel obligated to buy the Happy Meal.   While little Joey is busy playing, they figure a couple of those fries won't hurt, and a bite or two of those chicken nuggets are probably okay—they do have protein—and they hate to see it go to waste.  Later when fixing dinner, just a little sample to make sure it isn't too salty.   When cleaning up, they take just a small piece of the bread that Little Joey didn't even touch.   All those little bites?—they add up to big calories at the end of the day—and take a big bite out of reaching your fitness goals.

The Intentional/Controlled Cheater is the only form of cheating that is legal and won't keep you from attaining your fitness goals.   This is the category that I fall under.  I do not always eat perfect—that being said—I try to keep a clean diet almost all the time.

At our house, Saturday night is movie night.  It is the one time during the week I break the no food in the living room rule.  It is also the one day of the week I get to legally cheat on my clean diet rules.  We go shopping for movie night treats, which consists of popcorn, candy, and we usually order a pizza complete with breadsticks and Buffalo wings.  We get mounds of blankets and pillows and picnic in the living room.   I look forward to this time with my family all week.  I wouldn't give it up for anything.  The rest of the time we—even the kids—make a conscience effort to be as healthy as we can.

I also break the clean diet rules for my children's birthday parties—I will NOT forego a piece of birthday cake in celebration of my child's life—NO WAY!  If we go to a BBQ or somebody invites us out, I will munch on a few chips and eat the hamburger— I don't want to be rude.  You will never see me eating just a salad on my wedding anniversary, nor will I refuse to eat a homemade chocolate chip cookie on Christmas Eve with my children.  To me, these are the celebrations that are the building blocks of a happy life—kind of like protein is to muscle.  I don't consider it cheating; I consider it the precious moments in life.

So what can/should you do?

  • Take the time to read labels.   Check content for extra sugar, fructose syrup, sodium, and high levels of "bad" fat (sat/trans look instead for foods with omega 3 fats).   Try to avoid packaged processed foods altogether when possible and opt instead for fresh foods or foods you prepare at home.
  • Quit procrastinating—there is no time like today.  An old Chinese proverb states that "The best day to plant a tree was twenty years ago, the second best day is today."
  • Remember that getting fit is a lifestyle.  Although there will be times when a piece of cake is appropriate—reserve those for special occasions or one night a week you have set aside as a "treat-night."  It is important though that even special occasions and "treat-night" require some moderation.  Indulge a little--but don't binge.
  • Often we don't realize all the extra calories we eat without even thinking about it.  For one week, carry a sandwich bag with you on a daily basis.   Every time you are about to sample the macaroni and cheese, the dinner you are preparing, a single Fruit Loop, French fry, or chicken nugget, put it in the sandwich bag instead of your mouth.  You will be surprised how quickly it can fill up.   Consider the calories you have saved at the end of the week.
  • When you do have a legitimate reason you are cheating, such as special celebrations or a predetermined night that is set aside, keep it within reason.   You can have pizza with the kids, but you don't have to eat an entire large pizza by yourself.   Pick a treat such as a dark chocolate candy bar (filled with antioxidants) but don't eat the entire bag of Cheetos (it is also not necessary to sample every movie treat that your kids have).

Diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease, which on long run can affect the entire body. Diabetes is caused by having too much glucose or sugar in the blood. Some of the factors are consider as chances to have diabetes and this factors are called as diabetes risk factors.

Carbohydrate metabolism
Carbohydrate is broken down in stomach and glucose is separated by the small intestine and realized in to the blood stream. On seeing the level of glucose in blood pancreas immediatly releases certain quantity of insulin with respect to the level of glucose in blood. Insulin in blood unlock body muscle cells thus it start consuming the glucose for energy. After glucose consumption, the excess of glucose available in the blood is stored in the liver by converting glucose into glucogen.

If no food consumed for certain period of time, then there will be shortage of glucose in blood. Low glucose level means low level of insulin in blood, on seeing this liver convert stored glucogen into glucose and realized into the blood stream to maintain blood glucose level, thus supply energy to the body.

Human Insulin hormone
The above said all glucose related conversions are controlled by insulin secreted by the pancreas. Insulin is a hormone and it is the controlling or commenting signal that controls carbohydrate metabolism and helps to maintain normal blood glucose level in blood.

If there is any shortage of insulin secretion or improper utilization (insulin resistance) of insulin leads to increased blood glucose level in blood called as diabetes mellitus.

Diabetes risk factors
Some of the factors can increases the chances of having diabetes called as diabetes risk factors. Some of the risk factors can be reduced or avoided by putting some effert and time. Few risk factors are not controlled by us and that can not be avoided.

Some of the risk factors of diabetes are:

  • Obesity - being over weight or obese can increases the chances of insulin resistance that in-turn leads to high blood glucose level called diabetes.
  • Sedentary life - Certain amount of physical activity is a must for the body to perform well. But today's sedentary life isolates us from any physical activity that leads to obesity or over weight. Also low physical activity increases the blood glucose level because of low utilization (burning of glucose).
  • Family history of diabetes - If mother had diabetes then there are chances to have diabetes, if father had diabetes then chances to have diabetes is more and if both father and mother had diabetes then chances to have diabetes is much more.
  • Gestational diabetes - If a mother had gestational diabetes during pregnancy then there are more chances of having diabetes for both the mother and the baby in the age advances.

If you are at high risk of having diabetes then one most important step to limit the chances of having diabetes is

  • Increased physical activity
  • Loss body weight

If both these things are achieved then diabetes can be avoided or at-least can be postponed.

Those of you who suffer with diabetes will know that diet plays a key role in managing your diabetes. Most diabetics take a controlled oral hypoglycemic drug or insulin; these will differ depending on sex, age, height, and weight. The most important thing for any person with diabetes is to ensure they eat the proper amounts of food and most important, the correct foods.

Many of you will already be aware of the importance of having regular check ups for high blood pressure and cholesterol levels. This can be done by your doctor or dietitian. Generally, good nutrition can help to keep your blood glucose level. If you can get into the habit of eating regularly and on time, it can help in avoiding low blood glucose.

It is best in your diet to try to limit your fat intake, foods that are high in saturated fats, check the labels on margarine and try to avoid eating too many take away or fast foods. The best oils for a diabetic are virgin olive oil and canola oil as these are mono unsaturated fat and are a lot healthier. Those of you who love a bag of chips would be a lot better to change them for some fresh fruit.

Try to incorporate in your diet plenty of foods that contain a high fiber content such as vegetables, fresh fruit or whole grains, switch from white bread to brown bread or a good whole grain loaf. Porridge oats could be chosen as your breakfast and will start you of for the day, as long as you choose milk with a low fat content and sprinkle some fresh fruit or nuts on instead of sugar.

The key to a good diet is to take care not to eat a diet of a high fat content, especially less saturated fat such as fatty meats, poultry skin, cheese, ice cream, whole milk, butter; these are just a few to be careful about. It is not to say you can never eat ice cream but a word with your dietitian or doctor can only enhance your knowledge as to how much as everybody's diabetes levels are different. Always choose lean pieces of meat and choose low fat or fat free dairy products.

Many of you will know that sticking to recommended daily calories is of great importance in maintaining your glucose levels. The normal calorie intake would be 1200 to 1800 consisting of 50% to 60% carbohydrates 12% to 20% protein and no more than 30% fats. As said before, everyone is different so check with your doctor or dietitian.

It has to be said for those who have just received confirmation that they have diabetes should not think they cannot have a healthy lifestyle; nothing can be further from the truth. Provided you follow all the guidelines regarding what not to eat and ensuring regular meals, you can do just about anything that anybody else does.
