Buy Your Diabetes Glucose Monitor Kit Carefully

Author: <a target="_blank" title="Roberto Sedycias" 'href="http://www.articlesbase.com/authors/'roberto-sedycias/12916">Roberto Sedycias

Whether you are a type 1 or type 2 diabetic, you need to have a regular and constant monitor to find the state of your health. Though most of the diabetic patients understand the importance of testing blood glucose level frequently, many of them are confused about selecting the right kind of meter.

When for the first time they are dictated with blood sugar, they rush to the nearest chemist and take home their glucose monitor kit without considering how effective it can be for them. But, now that research and studies are constantly being upgraded, glucose meters have got new forms and shapes. Whether you are purchasing your diabetes glucose monitor kit for the first time or you are less delighted with the one that you have and trying to get a new one, you have to consider various aspects of the home medical device.

A dependable Glucose meter:

While purchasing your diabetic glucose monitor kit you need to take care of two major aspects. The most expensive one is not surely the best one. There are many good quality strips available at a reasonable price. Hence, you must select the one that is affordable for you. Besides, select the one that has got the maximum features meeting your requirements. A standard diabetic glucose monitor kit is one that displays a striking balance between its cost and features.

Testing Strips:

Testing strips are unique for each testing meter. You may be thinking of the reason behind it. But more than that, it is important to find that which strip will go fine with your diabetes glucose monitor kit. Some models take comparably cheaper strips than other. After selecting the strip to buy take a 30 day test supply on hand. There is no reason why you should take over-the-counter and make it remain in your cupboard for ever.

Reading Logbook:

Now the meters are available with memory of keeping few hundred readings. But it is always better to keep a written logbook of your own that you can take with you to the doctor the next time you visit. It should store not only the readings of your blood glucose record, but also the date, time and the circumstances that led to the fluctuation in the record.

A lancing device and lancets:

Every diabetes glucose monitor kit is available with a lancing device and lancets. It is the most indispensable part of the whole kit as it pokes the skin to bleed for the test. Survey says, most people use and reuse the same lancet before changing it. But every time you should use fresh lancet for best result, less pain and hygiene.

There are some other things that you need to consider. Pick up a disposal container for the sharps like lancets and needles. Once the container is filled up it can be disposed off at a safe place. It is also essential to take blood contaminated materials such as swabs, tissues and test strips.

Type 2 diabetic patients are open to various side effects if they are not controlling their abnormal sugar level. The simple device of diabetes glucose monitor kit can inform you about your glucose level and you can decide on your intake of insulin. In case you are not satisfied with your idea of finding the right kind of device for you, search engine websites is the answer to all. You can search and gather complete information about it. Also you should consult your physician about the strips and the kind of glucose monitor kit that you should use.

What is Diabetes?
Diabetes is a disease in which the body does not produce or properly use insulin. Insulin is a hormone that is needed to convert sugar, starches and other food into energy needed for daily life. Because diabetics have a problem with insulin, their bodies can't use glucose for energy, which results in elevated blood glucose levels (hyperglycemia) and the eventual urination of sugar out of their bodies.

There are three main types of diabetes:
* Type 1 (insulin-dependent and previously called juvenile diabetes). Type 1 diabetes is associated with a malfunctioning pancreas, which does not produce adequate amounts of insulin. It develops most often in children and young adults.
* Type 2 (noninsulin-dependent, or adult-onset). Type 2 diabetes is associated with insulin resistant cells. It is much more common and usually develops in older adults. Type 2 diabetes is now being found at younger ages and is even being diagnosed among children and teens.
* Gestational (pregnancy-related). Some women develop diabetes during pregnancy. Although it goes away after pregnancy, these women have a higher risk for developing type 2 diabetes later in life.

Diabetes Facts
Here is a list of interesting, informative, and maybe terrifying facts about diabetes:
* Diabetes is the 6th Leading cause of death in US: 150,000 per year
* 20.8 million people in US (7% of population) have diabetes
* For every person that is diagnosed, many remain undiagnosed
* 8 million people remain undiagnosed
* Newly diagnosed cases growing at an epidemic rate
* Recent information indicates diabetes growing at 6% per year
* About 176,500 people aged 20 years or younger have diabetes
* Overall, the risk for death among people with diabetes is about twice that of people without diabetes of similar age

Some diabetes symptoms include:
* Frequent urination
* Excessive thirst
* Extreme hunger
* Unusual or Unexplained weight loss
* Increased fatigue
* Irritability
* Sudden or Blurry vision changes
* Tingling or numbness in hands or feet
* Poor ciculation
* Poor sleep
* Feeling very tired much of the time
* Irritability
* Very dry skin
* Sores that are slow to heal
* More infections than usual

Complications of Diabetes
* Eye disease and blindness
* Kidney disease
* Diabetic neuropathy
* Amputations
* Cardiovascular disease
* Pregnancy complications
* Flu- and pneumonia-related deaths
* Sexual Dysfunction

Alternative Natural Treatments
There are several components to a natural diabetes treatment like:
1.Medicines
2.Self-help
3.Diet
4.Exercise
5.Supplementation
6.natural supplementary diets
7.Glucose/Sugar
8.Insulin Therapy

Happy Howl-o-ween - Costumes For Dogs

Author: <a target="_blank" title="David Beart" 'href="http://www.articlesbase.com/authors/'david-beart/18341">David Beart

When it comes to Halloween, there's nothing more fun than carving a few pumpkins, dressing up the kiddies and creating the perfect scarecrow to grace our front yard. While we dish out so much dough for all those bewitching home additions and store bought costumes for the kiddies, when it comes to dressing up our adorable "fourth child", aka our charming Chihuahua or our dashing Dalmatian, often times the cash just isn't there.

If you're thinking of dressing up your fuzzy one, you don't have to break the bank. With a few simple add-ons and items that you may already have lying around the house, you can have your pup sporting the most spook-tacular look in the family in no time flat.

The Sweetly Spooky Spider

This costume idea is super simple. Requiring only a small amount of simple sewing our sweetly spooky spider design will turn your little pooch into an adorable arachnid quicker than you can say "Abra Cadabra!"

Start out with a simple doggie t shirt that you already have in pup's closet, a yard to two yards of fabric (according to the size of your dog. Large dogs will require two yards. Small lap dogs will require only one) and a small amount of pillow stuffing. Measure your pup from the middle of his back down to his feet. Subtract one inch from this measurement. This will be the length of your "spider legs".

To create your spider legs, simply cut out 8 "legs" according to the measurements you just took. For a smaller dog, create skinny legs to avoid "puppy overload." (You don't want any toppling mini-poodles!) For larger dogs, you can create heftier legs.

When cutting, just keep in mind that you will want to create enough width in your legs to sew and stuff each one. If you aren't sure what width to use don't worry. The charm of homemade costumes is that they do have flaws which make them even more kitschy and adorable.

Once you get the right length and width, fold the "leg" strips in half length wise and begin to sew the edges shut. If you aren't one for sewing and plan this as a one-time use costume, you can simply use a small strip of hot glue instead. Once you get about one inch to the top, begin to stuff the legs. You can use a pencil or ruler to help you get the stuffing into the longer areas. Then sew or hot glue the "leg" shut. Once you complete all eight legs, attach four legs to the both sides of the tee shirt. Make sure to leave enough room on the very top for your spider's eyes and mouth.

Finish with your choice number of eyes created with simple felt and a cute smile made from ribbon or fabric paint. And wah-la! A sweet spider costume for your little sweetie in less than thirty minutes!

Last Minute Looks

No time for sewing, prepping and buying? Here are several looks that are as simple as pie and still every bit as adorable as the real deal.

"Last Minute Moo"

Got a black or white doggie tee and a few fabric scraps or spare pieces of felt in the craft box? Then you have all the makings of the cutest moo cow in town! Simply cut out a few "spots" from those white or black fabric scraps. Hot glue the spots to the back of the shirt for an instant moo-moo in the making.
*Hot Howl-o-ween Tip: Got a little bell lying around the house? Slip it on your pup's collar. Have some pink fabric either in the sewing room or from an old t-shirt? Cut out an "utter" shape, hot glue the sides together, stuff with fluff, toilet paper or cotton balls and attach to the underside of pup's shirt.

"Hairy Pupper"

Got an old solid color t-shirt and scissors? Then you've got the beginnings of Hairy Pupper, the great doggie wizard! Simply cut a "cape" shape from the t-shirt leaving "strings" on either side at the top of the cape. This will be the cape's tie. Use other old scraps to create stars for the back of the cape. If you have fabric paint or glitter this works even better. Attach the stars to the cape and you have conjured up the perfect "spell" for cuteness!"

From spooky spiders to marvelous moo cows and everything in between, with just a little creativity you can dream up the perfect bewitching looks for your four legged friend sure to "charm" the socks off everyone they meet. From our family to yours, we wish you a very happy and oh, so spooky safe Howl-o-ween!

Diabetes Diet and Information

Author: Reeva

You should definitely take your diet seriously when it comes to gestational diabetes. It may take some getting used to but keep in mind that it is only for a short period of time. Once you have been diagnosed with gestational diabetes, your physician will help to instruct you on how to better care for yourself and for your unborn child. Sometimes just watching your diet can help, other times, you may have to enlist the help of medication or even insulin during your pregnancy.

A healthy diet is extremely important after the diagnosis of gestational diabetes just as it was prior to the diagnosis. You will want to make sure to cut out as much sugar out of your diet as possible, and to also consume plenty of proteins and vitamins. As a gestational diabetic, you will basically have the same symptoms as a Type 2 diabetic because of the hormones that are produced during the pregnancy. Your body is still producing insulin; however, it may not be enough and a lot of time by following a diabetic diet you will be able to help your body out and possibly even overcome the diabetic symptoms. In actuality, you will want to follow a diabetic menu for a Type 2 diabetic.

A Healthy Recipe - There are cookbooks that are available on the market today that are strictly for the gestational diabetic. In these cookbooks, you will find healthy, fulfilling recipes for breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, and even desserts. Another great place to look for gestational diabetes recipes is on the internet.

You don't necessarily have to follow a recipe that is just for the "pregnant" diabetic as you could use any diabetic cooking recipe. Since gestational diabetes is usually a result of hormones that are produced during pregnancy and resemble Type 2 diabetes, maintaining a healthy diet that is low in sugar, low in sodium, and high in proteins and vitamins is very important.

This subject has comprehensive information available on other sites and the information about the condition in this article has been made short to enable easy and quick understanding. Juvenile onset diabetes is called type one and usually, but not always, affects children and young adults and is where the body's production of insulin has ceased,this can occur at any age but diabetics must take daily insulin injections in order to survive. The purpose of insulin is to regulate the amount of glucose in our blood. The second form of diabetes usually affects people when they are of mature years,this can be controlled by diet but is caused by problems with the insulin production or its function.

Those energy foods which we all need to live are pasta, rice, potatoes, bread and fruit of course. High blood glucose levels over a long period of time can cause blindness, heart disease, kidney problems, and amputations.Prolonged periods of high blood glucose levels can lead to problems like heart disease, kidney complaints, blindness and even limb amputations. However, it is possible to manage diabetes by maintaining a strict health regime,then many of the conditions associated with this condition can be slowed down considerably if not stopped altogether. It is possible to live a relatively normal life provided you stick to the plan laid out by your doctor,this means maintaining the correct level of blood sugar, cholesterol and blood fat along with giving up cigarettes.

Learn About The Diabetes Month

Author: <a target="_blank" title="Jeanie Smith" 'href="http://www.articlesbase.com/authors/'jeanie-smith/62847">Jeanie Smith

November is National Diabetes Awareness month. Diabetes is the seventh leading cause of death (fifth leading cause of death by disease) in America. According to the American Diabetes Association Diabetes affects over 20 million Americans, that's 7% of the population! Another 41 million Americans have pre-diabetes. That means out of every 5 people at least one of them has either diabetes or pre-diabetes. Chances are this includes you are someone you know. Every day approximately 2,200 people are diagnosed with diabetes, and the statistics getting worse each year.

I believe we can reverse this trend through education and awareness. Here are 7 things that we all can do to reverse the trend and eliminate the need for Diabetes Awareness Month.

1. Talk to your doctor, if you have diabetes or are at risk for diabetes you must find out as much as possible from your doctor as soon as possible.

2. If you have diabetes, learn how to manage your blood sugar. This is vitally important to reduce the risk of serious complications, such as heart disease, blindness, kidney failure, and lower-extremity amputations.

3. If you do not have diabetes, find out if you are at-risk. Find out how you can reduce your risk factors, to prevent or postpone a diagnosis.

4. Donate to the American Diabetes Association, directly or sponsor someone in the Diabetes Walk or the Tour de Cure. You can participate or volunteer for one of these events. Find out more from the American Diabetes Association at http://www.diabetes.org

5. Maintain or obtain a healthy weight. If you have diabetes, losing weight will improve your blood sugar control, and if you are risk, it reduces your likelihood of becoming diabetic.

6. Eat a healthy diet. A healthy diet will also help keep your blood sugar stable and helps you maintain a healthy weight. Moderating calories helps maintain or lose weight, and controlling the amount of carbohydrates and when you eat them helps control your blood sugar.

7. Exercise regularly. Exercise is very important in controlling blood sugar and even preventing diabetes. Moderate exercise most days of the week improves insulin resistance and assists in weight-loss or maintenance. Exercise is vital tool for a long, healthy life whether you have diabetes or not.

Diet Or Regular Soft Drinks, Which Do You Prefer?

Author: <a target="_blank" title="Faye Bautista" 'href="http://www.articlesbase.com/authors/'faye-bautista/28073">Faye Bautista

They are joining the lowly ranks of candy and sugary sweets. Some researchers even warn against diet soda, claiming it could lead to a loss of calcium. And of course, 'regular' soda is being blamed for contributing to weight gain and diabetes.

Then, with regards to association with heart disease, it doesn't matter which one you chose, both are linked to increased risk of heart disease and developing metabolic syndrome.

Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of cardiovascular disease and diabetes risk factors including excess waist circumference, high blood pressure, elevated triglycerides, low levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL "good" cholesterol) and high fasting glucose levels -- three or more of which, increases a person's risk of developing diabetes and cardiovascular disease. It also increases the risk of heart disease by two to four times that than the normal population and increases the risk of type-2 diabetes by nine to 30 times, not to mention its detrimental effects to the kidneys, liver, ovaries, a person's ability to sleep and even dementia.

According to statistics, metabolic syndrome affects up to 30 percent of the industrialized world's population, and is expected to affect 50 to 75 million Americans by the year 2010.

As reported by the Framingham researchers in Circulation: Journal of the American Heart Association, drinking one or more soft drink daily (whether regular or diet) may increase the risk factors for heart disease, among others:
- 31 percent greater risk of developing new-onset obesity (defined as a body mass index [BMI] of 30 kilograms/meter2 or more);
- 30 percent increased risk of developing increased waist circumference;
- 25 percent increased risk of developing high blood triglycerides or high fasting blood glucose;
- 32 percent higher risk of having low HDL levels.

A trend towards an increased risk of developing high blood pressure that was not statistically significant. According to Ravi Dhingra, M.D., lead author of the study and an instructor in medicine at Harvard Medical School: "Moderation in anything is the key. If you are drinking one or more soft drinks a day, you may be increasing your risk of developing metabolic risk factors for heart disease."

For those who already have diabetes, soft drinks are double trouble anyway. What with all that sugar content!

Also, According to Ramachandran Vasan, M.D., senior author of the Framingham Heart Study and professor of medicine at Boston University School of Medicine: One explanation is that the fructose corn syrup in regular soft drinks causes weight gain, and can lead to insulin resistance and diabetes. But then you would expect to see an association with regular soft drinks, but not diet soft drinks.

Our findings suggest that this is not the case. Another possible explanation is that consuming more liquids is associated with a lesser degree of dietary compensation. However, the researchers admit that these results need to be replicated in further studies before recommendations can be made.

Type 2 Diabetes Diets: Type 2 Diabetes Diets? There Is A New One That May Cure You!

Author: <a target="_blank" title="Scott Waye" 'href="http://www.articlesbase.com/authors/'scott-waye/321545">Scott Waye

When looking at type 2 diabetes diets you need one that does not just lower blood sugar but also heals the pancreas. The importance of this is you may stop all medications. There is a new diet from a filmmaker that has been doing this, see here http://spirithappy.wordpress.com/new-type-2-diabetes-diet-cure/

Diabetes is a serious illness that must be attacked immediately, if you wait you risk the loss of your body organs. Diabetes is a crisis and deadly illness,it does horrible things to the body before you die. The diabetic can expect to lose the use of their legs. The circulation to the legs are being cut off. This is due to the sugar in the blood poisoning the system The blood cannot do the job because it is dirty. The sugar is clogging up the bloodstream. This is a horrible thing to happen.

Time is not on the side of the diabetic too wait is another day when the body is dying. Diets are a good start, those serious about attacking diabetes must look for type 2 diabetes diets.The problem with these diets are that they do not heal the pancreas and this is why the sugar keeps running free in the bloodstream. If you do not stop this the sugar can eventually have you lose your legs. When the body parts cannot get clean blood there is a circulation problem.

This is why many diabetics will have to have there legs removed. This is something that is avoidable if you act fast enough. Time is not on the side of the person with high blood sugar; everyday the bloodstream is dying out. Remember do not wait find a good diet that also heals the pancreas or you will not be cured. Those serious about a cure can see the filmmaker diet that has been helping many here http://spirithappy.wordpress.com/new-type-2-diabetes-diet-cure/

The Lowdown on High Blood Sugar by Jerry Ryan, Ph.d

Author: <a target="_blank" title="Jerry Ryan, Ph.D." 'href="http://www.articlesbase.com/authors/'jerry-ryan-phd/18773">Jerry Ryan, Ph.D.

Diabetes. High blood sugar. Isn’t that an ‘old people’ disease? Doesn’t that only cause problems for your grandparents or other elderly relatives and friends? Is that the disease where you have to give yourself shots every day? That’s the disease that you get from eating too much sugar, right? Isn’t it true that only fat people get that illness?

Before we go much further, let’s go over some basics about diabetes. First, about 5.5 million Americans are currently being treated for diabetes. Studies imply that 5 million more Americans have undetected diabetes and another 20 million have an impaired glucose tolerance that may lead to diabetes. That’s a significant amount of people. The National Institutes of Health state that millions of people lose their vision each year due to undetected diabetes. Most important to note is that the third leading cause of death in the United States is the complications of diabetes.

There are two different forms of diabetes and it’s not the Type I and Type II that you always hear about. The first form is called Diabetes Insipidus. This kind of diabetes is very rare and has two causes. There may be a low level of a hormone called vasopressin or the kidneys cannot effectively respond to the vasopressin. The key symptoms of this metabolic malfunction are an extreme thirst and high urine output.

The more common form of diabetes is called Diabetes Mellitus. It is the result of a problem with the pancreas and its production of insulin. The body’s blood sugar level is dependent on the proper amounts of insulin produced to breakdown the glucose (sugar) in our diet. Diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease of carbohydrate metabolism. Genetics certainly plays a part in developing diabetes but a diet of highly processed, low-fiber foods has been seen as a major contributor in most cases. This type of diet leads to obesity resulting in overweight individuals having a higher risk of diabetes.

Diabetes mellitus is the Type I and Type II diabetes that you’ve heard about. Type I, known as insulin-dependent or juvenile diabetes. This form of diabetes involves the destruction of the beta cells in the pancreas that produce insulin. It is most common in children.

Individuals with Type I diabetes show the following symptoms:

•	Irritability

•	Frequent urination

•	Abnormal thirst

•	Nausea/Vomiting

•	Weight loss

•	Fatigue

•	Weakness

•	Unusual hunger

•	Frequent bedwetting (in children)

Type I diabetics are also susceptible to episodes of high blood sugar (hyperglycemia) and low blood sugar (hypoglycemia). Either of these conditions can cause serious medical problems.

Hyperglycemia can sneak up slowly over a period of hours or days and it is most common during an illness. A chief warning sign is the inability to keep down fluids. Possible complications include stroke, coma, blindness, kidney failure, and nerve damage. Hypoglycemia, on the other hand, comes on rapidly and can be caused by skipping meals or exercising too much. The signs of hypoglycemia include dizziness, hunger, confusion, sweating, and tingling lips. Complications can be double vision, trembling, disorientation, and coma.

Type II diabetes is most likely to happen in individuals with a family history of diabetes. This form of diabetes is slightly different. The pancreas produces insulin but it doesn’t work properly. As a result, the blood sugar level remains high because the glucose cannot get into the body’s cells as quickly as it should.

Folks with Type II diabetes exhibit the following symptoms:

•	Blurred vision

•	Itching

•	Unusual thirst

•	Fatigue

•	Slow wound healing

•	Numbness in hands and feet

•	Skin infections

•	Lingering flu symptoms

•	Loss of hair on legs

•	Increased facial hair

•	Small, yellow bumps on the body

A common first indicator of diabetes in men is a condition known as balanoposthitis. This condition is an inflammation of the penis and foreskin and usually accompanies frequent urination.

There is a wide range of natural health options that are available to diabetics. Maintaining a proper diet and participating in an exercise program are two of the most important ways to control diabetes. Your physician and dietician will be most helpful in developing a food plan that will be best for you. A rule of thumb for a diabetic diet is to eat foods that contain complex carbohydrates, low fat, and high fiber. That means plenty of fruits and vegetables, including juices. The complex carbs enter the system more slowly, the fiber helps slow the blood sugar spikes, and the low fat keeps the fat levels in your bloodstream down. Avoid the simple sugars and the saturated fats.

Exercise is of equal importance since obesity is a major contributing factor in Type II diabetes. Your physician and therapists can help you develop a weight reduction program to fit your needs.

In addition to diet and exercise, there are nutritional supplements that have been found helpful for diabetes. These supplements are:

Chromium picolinate – enhances the effect of insulin resulting in lower blood sugar levels

L-Glutamine – reduces sugar cravings

Biotin – assists in glucose metabolism

Manganese – important for repair of the pancreas

Do not take any supplements that contain cysteine, an amino acid. It can cause problems with the ability of the cells to absorb insulin properly.

Vitamins B, C, and E are also helpful as antioxidants. They work toward the prevention of secondary complications of diabetes such a vision and vascular problems. However, large doses of Vitamin C or B1 should be avoided because they may inactivate insulin.

Several herbs are also advocated for diabetes. These herbs are cedar berries, huckleberry, ginseng, bilberry, dandelion root, buchu, and uva ursi. Each herb has a specific role in maintaining proper blood sugar levels.

Because diabetes causes problems with the circulatory system, it is vital to avoid tobacco in any form. Tobacco constricts the blood vessels and slows the circulation. Tobacco use provides less oxygen to the extremities. This lack of oxygen plays a major role in the development of foot ulcers commonly seen in diabetics.

There are many reasons to try to prevent the onset of diabetes. It threatens your overall health and can lead to a wide range of complications. Here are just a few.

Diabetic Retinopathy – This is damage done to the retina and is the leading cause of blindness in the United States.

Diabetic Nephropathy - This is damage done to the kidneys and is the leading cause of death in diabetics.

Diabetic Neuropathy - This is damage done to the nerves and is characterized by numbness, tingling, and pain. It affects the feet, legs, and hands.

It has been said that diabetes is deceptive, insidious, and inconvenient. If you feel that you are experiencing signs of diabetes, check with your primary care provider.

Physician Assistant Education Resource Guide

List of CASPA & Non-CASPA Physician Assistant Schools

During my reseach as a prospective PA student, I stumbled through various information resources attempting to find a concise list of programs and the respective deadlines for application submission. This site is a collection of ALL Accredited Physician Assistant programs, CASPA and Non-CASPA programs throughout the United States.

The field is expanding due to an increase in applicants to accredited PA programs, while Nurse Practitioners (NPs) are seeing a decline in enrollement into their respective programs. NPs and PAs have very similar functions and often serve as the gateway to health care, primary care physicians. Its likely that prospective students are moving toward PA because of the additional responsibilities they are eligible carry, for example: surgery and anesthesiology. The outlook for both professions is very good as there continues to be a shortage of graduating primary care physicians from MD and DO programs.

In 2001 approximately 104,000 nurse practitioners (NPs) and physician assistants (PAs) were in clinical employment throughout the United States. The roles of PAs and NPs in providing comparable physician services are similar; they differ in that NPs are predominantly in primary care, while PAs are divided between primary and specialty care. PA and NP education processes also differ in the student pool and trends in the output. The combined number of graduates totaled 11,585 in 2001. However, the annual number of NP graduates is declining, while the number of PA graduates is increasing. These observations have implications for the future in the types of patients they see and the degree of health care services they provide.

Quick Facts about PAs from BLS

Physician assistant programs usually last at least 2 years; admission requirements vary by program, but many require at least 2 years of college and some health care experience.

All States require physician assistants to complete an accredited education program and to pass a national exam in order to obtain a license.

Employment is projected to grow much faster than average as health care establishments increasingly use physician assistants to contain costs.

Job opportunities should be good, particularly in rural and inner-city clinics.

Diabetes: African Americans Deadly Foe

Author: <a target="_blank" title="Beverley Brooke" 'href="http://www.articlesbase.com/authors/'beverley-brooke/18922">Beverley Brooke

This makes EFA's an important part of your diet. Other sources of these fats are fish and nuts.

Flax Seed Oil is also known as Linseed Oil. FlaxSeed is a blue flowering plant that is grown on the Western Canadian Prairies for its oil rich seeds. FlaxSeed oil is highly recommended for the general well being, whole body nutrition and helps in restoring body's natural balance of good and bad prostaglandins. The first time you see flax seeds you were probably, like "ok, they look like sesame seeds, who are you trying to fool?" They may look like sesame seeds, but boy do they pack in a lot of nutrition.

Another study has found that omega-3 fatty acids, and by extension, flaxseed, can reduce the risk of macular degeneration, which is an eye disease that destroys vision by damaging nerve cells in the eye.

Besides lignans, flaxseeds and their oil are also the best food sources of an essential fatty acid, alpha-linolenic acid. "Essential" means we must consume it, because our bodies cannot manufacture it.

Diabetes: African Americans Deadly Foe

Diabetes is having a devastating effect on the African American community. Diabetes is the fifth leading cause of death in African Americans and their death rates are twenty seven percent higher than whites.

Over 2.8 million African Americans have diabetes and one third of them don't know they have the disease. In addition, twenty five percent of African Americans between the ages of 65 - 74 have diabetes and one in four African American women, over the age of 55, have been diagnosed with the disease The cause of diabetes is a mystery, but researchers believe that both genetics and environmental factors play roles in who will develop the disease.

Heredity

Researchers believe that African Americans and African Immigrants are predisposed to developing diabetes. Research suggests that African Americans and recent African immigrants have inherited a "thrifty gene" from their African ancestors.

This gene may have enabled Africans to use food energy more efficiently during cycles of feast and famine. Now, with fewer cycles of feast and famine, this gene may make weight control more difficult for African Americans and African Immigrants. This genetic predisposition, coupled with impaired glucose tolerance, is often associated with the genetic tendency toward high blood pressure. People with impaired glucose tolerance have higher than normal blood glucose levels and are at a higher risk for developing diabetes.

What is Diabetes?

Diabetes, commonly know as "sugar diabetes", is a condition that occurs when the body is unable to properly produce or use insulin. Insulin is needed by the body to process sugar, starches and other foods into energy. Diabetes is a chronic condition for which there is no known cure; diabetes is a serious disease and should not be ignored.

Diabetics often suffer from low glucose levels (sugar) in their blood. Low blood sugar levels can make you disorientated, dizzy, sweaty, hungry, have headaches, have sudden mood swings, have difficulty paying attention, or have tingling sensations around the mouth.

Types of Diabetes

Pre-diabetes is a condition that occurs when a person's blood glucose levels is higher than normal but not high enough for a diagnosis of type II diabetes. Pre-diabetes can cause damage to the heart and circulatory system, but pre-diabetes can often be controlled by controlling blood glucose levels. By controlling pre-diabetes you can often prevent or delay the onset of Type II diabetes.

Type I or juvenile-onset diabetes usually strikes people under the age of 20, but can strike at any age. Five to ten percent of African Americans who are diagnosed with diabetes are diagnosed with this type of the disease. Type I diabetes is an autoimmune disease where the body produces little or no insulin and this type of diabetes must be treated with daily insulin injections.

Type II or adult onset diabetes is responsible for ninety to ninety-five percent of diagnosed diabetes cases in African Americans. Type II results from a condition where the body fails to properly use insulin. According to the American Diabetes Association, "Type II is usually found in people over 45, who have diabetes in their family, who are overweight, who don't exercise and who have cholesterol problems." In the early stages it can often be controlled with lifestyle changes, but in the later stages diabetic pills or insulin injections are often needed.

There are also many ways of consuming the seeds. You can simply just chew them. You can grind the seeds to make a power.

As a source of fiber mucilage, oral flaxseed (not flaxseed oil) may possess laxative properties, although only one human trial has been conducted for this indication. Researchers found low incidences of breast cancer and colon cancer in populations that have high amounts of Lignan in their diet.

Flax Hull Lignans are very beneficial for many health conditions. Studies have shown that SDG or lignan (secoisolariciresinol diglycoside, but for simplicity this substance will be referred to as lignans)

The fiber in flaxseeds may also help against cholesterol, since it is soluble (similar to that in oats). Pregnancy related diabetes or gestational diabetes can occur in pregnant women. Gestational diabetes is often associated with high glucose blood levels or hyperglycemia. Gestational diabetes affects about four percent of all pregnant women. The disease usually goes away after delivery, but women who suffer from gestational diabetes are at a higher risk for developing diabetes later in life.

Symptoms of Diabetes

The most common symptoms of diabetes include:

excessive urination including frequent trips to the bathroom

increased thirst

increased appetite

blurred vision

unusual weight loss

increased fatigue

irritability

Complications from Diabetes

Diabetes can lead to many disabling and life threatening complications. Strokes, blindness, kidney failure, heart disease, and amputations are common complications that effect African Americans who have diabetes

Kidney Disease

"Diabetes is the second leading cause of end stage kidney disease in African Americans, accounting for about thirty percent of the new cases each year," says the National Kidney Foundation of Illinois. Up to twenty-one percent of people who develop diabetes will develop kidney disease.

Amputations

Diabetes is the leading cause of non-traumatic lower-limb amputations in the United States. More than sixty percent of non-traumatic lower-limb amputations in America occur among people with diabetes and African Americans are almost three times more likely to have a lower limb amputated due to diabetes than whites. According to Center for Disease Control (CDC), about 82,000 non-traumatic lower-limb amputations were performed among people with diabetes in 2001.

Blindness

African Americans are twice as likely to suffer from diabetes related blindness. Diabetics can develop a condition called "Diabetic Retinopathy", a disease affecting the blood vessels of the eye, which can lead to impaired vision and blindness. Diabetes is the leading cause of new cases of blindness in people from 20 - 74 years of age and up to 24,000 people loose their sight each year because of diabetes.

Heart Disease

People with diabetes are up to four times more likely to develop heart disease as people who don't have diabetes. Atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries) is more common in diabetics and can lead to increased risk of heart attacks, stroke, and poor circulation throughout the body.

Diabetes Risk Factors

You have a greater risk for developing diabetes if you have any of the following:

Obesity

Family history of diabetes

Pre-diabetes

Low physical activity

Age greater than 45 years

High blood pressure

High blood levels of triglycerides

HDL cholesterol of less than 35

Previous diabetes during pregnancy or baby weighing more than 9 pounds

Diabetes has had a devastating effect on the African American community; it is the fifth leading cause of death and second leading cause of end stage kidney disease in African Americans. African Americans suffer from complications from diabetes at a much higher rate than the rest of the population. African Americans are three times more likely to have a lower limb amputated because of diabetes and twice as likely to suffer from diabetes related blindness.

If you have any of the diabetes risk factors you should contact your physician and have a blood glucose test. Also discuss with your physician lifestyle changes you can take to lower your chances of developing diabetes.

Cardiovascular disease kills more Americans than the next 7 causes of death combined - including cancer - the AHA report states. In this Omega-3 benefits and facts section you will learn the basics about omega-3 essential fatty acids (EFA) from fish oils and their function in our bodies.
