Do You Have a History of Diabetes?

Author: Marlon Dirk

There can be little doubt that diabetes is a growing problem, and more and more men and women are finding themselves faced with the serious health challenges a diagnosis of diabetes carries with it. Diabetics face an increased risk of circulation problems, vision problems, cardiac issues and other serious complications. It is important, therefore, for those newly diagnosed with diabetes, as well as those who have been living with the disease for years, to understand the disease and how it can be kept under control. There may be a history of diabetes in your family, if there is, you need to be regularly tested to ensure you stay healthy.

The testing process for diabetes is straightforward enough, but it is important for patients to understand how the disease is diagnosed as well as what treatment options are available. Diabetes is broken down into type 1 and type 2, with type 1 representing childhood diabetes and type 2 representing the adult onset version. It is important to note that as the developed world continues to struggle with problems related to obesity and poor diet, adult onset diabetes is being seen in younger and younger men and women and increasingly in children and teenagers as well.

No matter what the type, the symptoms that lead diabetics to initially seek treatment are very similar. Typical symptoms that suggest a diagnosis of diabetes include excessive thirst, frequent urination and unexplained weight loss. These symptoms may worsen over time, prompting those affected to seek medical assistance.

Routine screening for adult onset diabetes is recommended as part of the standard medical examination for those with a number of risk factors that may predispose them to the disease. These risk factors include a family history of diabetes, obesity, poor diet and smoking. Those who may be at risk should be sure to share this information with their doctors in order to develop an effective screening program.

There are a number of tests used by medical professionals to screen for diabetes, including the fasting blood glucose test, the glucose tolerance test and random blood glucose testing. It is important for patients to discuss the pros and cons of each of these methods, as well as their specific risk factors, in order to determine the best course of treatment.

The criteria for determining whether or not a particular patient is diabetic is quite specific, but the exact blood sugar reading that indicates a diagnosis of diabetes will be different depending on the exact type of test performed. After the testing has been completed and the results received it is important for each patient to discuss his or her results with their family doctor. A thorough understanding of the underlying disease condition is the first step toward effective treatment.

For many clinicians the fasting plasma glucose test is considered the gold standard of diabetes testing, and many doctors will utilize this test in order to confirm or rule out a diagnosis of diabetes made through the random glucose testing method. A glucose level of 126 mg/dL or higher made through a fasting glucose test indicates a diagnosis of diabetes.

Another excellent test for diagnosing diabetes in children and adults is the glucose tolerance test. During this test a 75g dose of glucose is administered orally and the patient’s blood plasma glucose level is taken two hours later. A plasma glucose level at or above 200 mg/dL indicates diabetes is present.

Random blood glucose testing is frequently used to rule a diagnosis of diabetes in or out, as well as to keep track of blood sugar levels in those with a confirmed diagnosis. A random blood glucose level of at or above 200 mg/dL typically indicates that diabetes is present, although the doctor may order one of the other two tests in order to confirm that diagnosis.

This confirmation is particularly important when clinical symptoms such as increased thirst, unexplained weight loss, frequent urination and blurred vision have not been reported. Diabetes is a chronic condition with lifelong implications for the patient, and it is important for physicians to make a confirmed diagnosis before ordering treatment and lifestyle changes. Repeated blood sugar testing may be ordered, particularly if the original readings were borderline.

There is no doubt that a diagnosis of diabetes is a life-changing event, and that is why physicians and others in the medical community are so careful about making and confirming such a diagnosis. Enormous strides have been made recently in both the testing and treatment of diabetes, and additional discoveries continue to be made year after year. While there is still no cure for diabetes, there are more effective ways to control the disease. From diet and lifestyle changes to better medications, there are plenty of avenues for diabetes to explore.

Natural And Herbal Cure Of Diabetes

Author: Ashish Jain

With the failure of the over the counter medications, the herbs have re-emerged as the dominant powers in the treatment of diabetes. According to Chinese Medicine, diabetes is not considered as a disease as such. It is a condition of disharmony. The major symptoms are severe thirst and hunger. At the same time, in spite of the excessive hunger, you lose weight. There are many Chinese herbs that were used traditionally for the treatment of diabetes. These herbs are now the subject matter of extensive research. The results of the research are encouraging.

One such Chinese herb that has shown its mettle in the treatment of diabetes is mai men dong. The sole problem in the treatment of diabetes, is to maintain the level of insulin. Research done on this herb indicates its right potential. Through this herb, the Chinese researchers have shown the capability to stimulate regeneration of cells. The cells in question are in the Islets of Langerhans in the pancreas. These are the cells that owe responsibility for appropriate production of insulin. If this process is taken care of, perhaps you are taking care of the diabetes.

Another Chinese herb that has the capability to reduce the blood sugar level is tian hua fen. It is now extensively used in herbal formulations to treat diabetes.

A vegetable extensively grown in India, bitter melon, is known to lower the blood sugar levels. It is dried and then used in the powder form as well. This vegetable has antibacterial and antiviral properties.

There is another important treatment for diabetes, on which not much research seems to have been done, but traditionally, it is very popular. Take fresh curry leaves (4 to 5 leaves), in the morning on the empty stomach, after properly masticating it. Continue with this schedule for about 6 months. Even the chronic diabetes will be cured once for all.

When you are told about the qualities of herbs that have the potentiality to give you relief in your diabetic condition, do not be under the impression that herbs alone will do the job. You need to review your food habits extensively and decide what went wrong with you, which made the entry of diabetes in your body easy and possible. It is no use if you take the herbal medicines on the one side and continue with your junk food and ice creams on the other side. You need to change your lifestyle according to the needs of your body.

The supreme advantage of herbal medicines in the treatment of diabetes is that they have no side effects. If at all they are there, they are not harmful, but beneficial!

Feel Better with Funny T-Shirts

Author: Shen

It's been an age-old belief that laughter makes sick people well.  In fact, a lot of publications exploring the healing powers of humor have been released with scientific studies even confirming truth to these claims.  Laughter is said to bring a lot of health benefits to people from increased immunity to decreased stress.  It is even said that a simple smile will do although laughter still might be more effective in hastening an ill person's recovery.  Definitely, this makes people automatically attracted to whatever tickles their funny bone, including funny t-shirts.

Aside from making people feel good, funny tees have also become a fashion phenomenon.  Even celebrities have been spotted off cam wearing funny tees which surely helps in making them more popular.  Besides, someone who wears a witty thought across his chest is generally viewed as cool.  But beyond this physical appeal, we know there's always something more to the humor that is more mysterious and interesting.  For example, did you know that laughter, genuine or not, sets off the same physiological reactions that   produce the same healing effects in your body?  This actually makes it healthy to laugh simply for health reasons which mean a person who breaks into laughter without any apparent reason may not necessarily be a looney.

Did you also ever wonder why children tend to recover faster than adults even if they're generally more susceptible to diseases?  This fact is being associated with kids' ability to find more reasons to laugh as compared to adults who tend to get too uptight with lessened capability to see humor in life as they age.  This also means that it's always better for people to always try to see the brighter side of things no matter how gloomy they seem.

Somewhere out there, there's always a reason to be happy and growing a skill for spotting that reason is more likely to happen when humor becomes a way of life.  It's not even always about laughing.  Mere openness of the mind to receive humor is the most important part of all.  Part of the healing wonders of laughter has something to do with the psychological dimension in a human being.  Aside from the  physiological benefits, laughter also works to improve one's disposition in life.  And it is a guaranteed stress reliever which is probably one of its properties that gives it such tremendous power to heal.  It is said that most of today's ailments are significantly linked to stress. Thus, it follows that controlling this stress through humor promotes healing.

In today's busy world, we can help bring humor back to people's lives simply by wearing a funny t-shirt.  Who knows, when you meet someone who's about to give up on life, reading that funny message you're wearing could actually make him change his mind.

Happy Howl-o-ween - Costumes For Dogs

Author: David Beart

When it comes to Halloween, there's nothing more fun than carving a few pumpkins, dressing up the kiddies and creating the perfect scarecrow to grace our front yard. While we dish out so much dough for all those bewitching home additions and store bought costumes for the kiddies, when it comes to dressing up our adorable "fourth child", aka our charming Chihuahua or our dashing Dalmatian, often times the cash just isn't there.

If you're thinking of dressing up your fuzzy one, you don't have to break the bank. With a few simple add-ons and items that you may already have lying around the house, you can have your pup sporting the most spook-tacular look in the family in no time flat.

The Sweetly Spooky Spider

This costume idea is super simple. Requiring only a small amount of simple sewing our sweetly spooky spider design will turn your little pooch into an adorable arachnid quicker than you can say "Abra Cadabra!"

Start out with a simple doggie t shirt that you already have in pup's closet, a yard to two yards of fabric (according to the size of your dog. Large dogs will require two yards. Small lap dogs will require only one) and a small amount of pillow stuffing. Measure your pup from the middle of his back down to his feet. Subtract one inch from this measurement. This will be the length of your "spider legs".

To create your spider legs, simply cut out 8 "legs" according to the measurements you just took. For a smaller dog, create skinny legs to avoid "puppy overload." (You don't want any toppling mini-poodles!) For larger dogs, you can create heftier legs.

When cutting, just keep in mind that you will want to create enough width in your legs to sew and stuff each one. If you aren't sure what width to use don't worry. The charm of homemade costumes is that they do have flaws which make them even more kitschy and adorable.

Once you get the right length and width, fold the "leg" strips in half length wise and begin to sew the edges shut. If you aren't one for sewing and plan this as a one-time use costume, you can simply use a small strip of hot glue instead. Once you get about one inch to the top, begin to stuff the legs. You can use a pencil or ruler to help you get the stuffing into the longer areas. Then sew or hot glue the "leg" shut. Once you complete all eight legs, attach four legs to the both sides of the tee shirt. Make sure to leave enough room on the very top for your spider's eyes and mouth.

Finish with your choice number of eyes created with simple felt and a cute smile made from ribbon or fabric paint. And wah-la! A sweet spider costume for your little sweetie in less than thirty minutes!

Last Minute Looks

No time for sewing, prepping and buying? Here are several looks that are as simple as pie and still every bit as adorable as the real deal.

"Last Minute Moo"

Got a black or white doggie tee and a few fabric scraps or spare pieces of felt in the craft box? Then you have all the makings of the cutest moo cow in town! Simply cut out a few "spots" from those white or black fabric scraps. Hot glue the spots to the back of the shirt for an instant moo-moo in the making.
*Hot Howl-o-ween Tip: Got a little bell lying around the house? Slip it on your pup's collar. Have some pink fabric either in the sewing room or from an old t-shirt? Cut out an "utter" shape, hot glue the sides together, stuff with fluff, toilet paper or cotton balls and attach to the underside of pup's shirt.

"Hairy Pupper"

Got an old solid color t-shirt and scissors? Then you've got the beginnings of Hairy Pupper, the great doggie wizard! Simply cut a "cape" shape from the t-shirt leaving "strings" on either side at the top of the cape. This will be the cape's tie. Use other old scraps to create stars for the back of the cape. If you have fabric paint or glitter this works even better. Attach the stars to the cape and you have conjured up the perfect "spell" for cuteness!"

From spooky spiders to marvelous moo cows and everything in between, with just a little creativity you can dream up the perfect bewitching looks for your four legged friend sure to "charm" the socks off everyone they meet. From our family to yours, we wish you a very happy and oh, so spooky safe Howl-o-ween!

Juvenile Diabetes Symptoms

Author: Alice Saracho

Juvenile diabetes can be fatal, if not treated properly. The lack of insulin produced by the body will lead to increased concentrations of glucose in the bloodstream. Eventually, the pollution in the blood will start to overwhelm the body's major organs causing them to shut down. Fortunately, juvenile diabetes symptoms are not hard to identify. If your child begins to experience any of these signs, you should ask your doctor to run a test for diabetes. The symptoms may be a false alarm, but it's better to be safe than sorry.

Typical Juvenile Diabetes warning Signs

1. A noticeable increase in the need to urinate - as a person with juvenile diabetes goes through his day, his blood glucose levels are continually rising. When the blood reach a saturation point, it needs to get rid of some of the glucose. The way it does this is through urination. Assuming that the child is eating normally and not drinking an excessive amount of liquids, this is a sign that his body is unable to process the glucose in his blood stream properly - so it needs to get rid of the glucose. If, however, your child is drinking excess amounts of water, the frequent urination may simply be a result of that.

2. Increased thirst - this symptoms is very much related to the need to urinate. The body needs water to live. When the body needs water, thirst is the mechanism that the body uses to force you to drink. If your child is constantly urinating because of his body's need to get rid of excess glucose, it is inevitably going to become dehydrated. As this happens, the signal is sent to cause a thirst reaction so the child will drink.

3. Extreme weight loss - when you eat, your food is eventually broken down into food that the cells of the body can use directly - glucose. This is why glucose eventually winds up in the bloodstream - so the cell can feed from it. But what happens if, due to diabetes, the body is unable to use this food? Simple. The glucose  is jettisoned out with the urine. To survive, the body then has to look for food in other places - the muscles and fats of the body. This is why weight loss occurs. The body is, in essence, cannibalizing itself in an attempt to survive.

4. Constant need to eat - since your child's body is unable to use the food that he eats, he remains in a near constant state of hunger. Forcing him to eat more food, even as he loses weight and remains famished.

5. Feeling Tired - A child with diabetes can take in nourishment in the form of food, but his body can't use. Without food, the cells can't be energized. Therefore, the child will feel lifeless, listless, and tired.

Even though juvenile diabetes currently has no cure, it is very much treatable. That's why when juvenile diabetes symptoms show up in your child, you want to determine as quickly as possible if he will need treatment - and if so, begin that treatment as soon as possible.

Top 5 Diabetes Diet Tips for Creating Healthy Meal Plan

Author: Nishanth Reddy

Diet plays a key role in controlling your blood sugar. A healthy-eating plan tailored to your needs will do that and more. Majority of people affected with diabetes are overweight or obese. In fact, your risk of getting diabetes increases the more weight you put on.

So controlling your diet can be the key to reducing the risk of diabetes as well as improving your symptoms if you are already affected by this disease people often refer to as "the silent killer."

Everybody knows that maintaining a good diet is a healthy choice for every person. But for diabetes patients, this statement means something more significant than the recent fad over healthy living.

For diabetes patients, having a healthy diet means eating in a way that reduces the risk for complications that are commonly associated with their conditions, including heart disease and stroke. For them, a healthy diet could mean the difference between die-abetes and live-abetes.

Eating healthy involves eating a wide variety of foods that encompasses the whole diet spectrum of vegetables, whole grains, fruits, non-fat dairy products, beans, lean meats, poultry, and fish.

No, you do not have to eat all of that, but a little bit of this and that enough to balance the three basic food groups (Go, Grow, and Glow) is what you should aim for.

Tip #1: Preparing a Meal Plan

When you go on a diabetes diet, the first things you need to do is to prepare a meal plan. This will serve as your guide to how much and what kinds of food you can choose to eat at meals, and even at snack times if you wish to include that.

Now, be sure that your meal plan fits in with your schedule and eating habits. That way you will not be likely to ruin your diet simply because your work schedule conflicts with your meal schedule.

Keep in mind your end-goal: To keep your blood glucose in levels that are easy enough to maintain.

In addition to that somewhat myopic diet goal for diabetes, you also want to follow a meal plan that will help you improve your blood pressure and cholesterol levels as well as keep your weight on track.

All these - blood pressure, cholesterol and weight - are factors that contribute to the worsening of your diabetes symptoms, so controlling them could very well mean controlling your diabetes.

When preparing a meal plan, be sure to balance uptake and down take - that is, food and exercise, respectively. Additionally, your doctor may have prescribed you with insulin or oral medications to help you manage your condition.

Take those medications into account as well when you plan your meal plan, making sure that the food is balanced with the drugs. The whole thing sounds like it's a lot of work but with a few suggestions from your physician and/or dietician you can start building a meal plan that is best for you and your condition.

Tip #2: Use the Diabetes Food Pyramid

The Diabetes Food Pyramid, released by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) is composed of six food groups (arranged according to how much you should eat from the least to the most and based on carbohydrate and protein content):

• Fats, sweets, and alcohol
• Milk
• Meat, meat substitutes, and other proteins
• Fruits
• Vegetables
• Grains, beans, and starchy vegetables

Fats, sweets, and alcohol are the one food group that diabetes patients should avoid.

The problem with diabetes involves a certain malfunction in the way our bodies make use of glucose in the blood. It is either there is too much glucose in our blood because we ate too much food rich in sugar so that the hormone responsible for regulating glucose - insulin - is unable to cope. Or, our cells are defective so that even though we have enough insulin to handle the job, our cells do not respond.

In order to control the levels of glucose in the blood stream, controlling diabetes diet is important. The intake of fats, sweets, and alcohol and other generally "unhealthy" foods should be minimized and only for special treats.

As for the rest of the food groups, here are the serving sizes recommended by the American Diabetes Association:

• Meat and Meat Substitutes: 4-6 oz. per day and divided between meals. This is equivalent to ¼ cup cottage cheese, 1 egg, 1 tbsp peanut butter, or ½ cup tofu.
• Milk: 2-3 servings per day
• Fruit: 2-4 servings per day
• Vegetables: 3-5 servings per day
• Grains and Starches: 6-11 servings per day, equivalent to 1 slice of bread, ¼ of a bagel, or ½ of an English muffin or pita bread.

Use this Diabetes Food Pyramid only as a guide in planning your meals. If you want a more individualized option, consult your dietician.

Tip #3: Draw Lines on Your Plate

Another good way to ensure that you are eating a balanced diet is to draw a line across your plate. It could only be an imaginary line. As you sit there for a meal, the exercise might even prove to be fun.

The first step, of course, is to imagine that you are drawing a line through the center of your plate. Then, divide one of the halves into two.

Then, fill this section with grains or starchy foods, such as rice, pasta, potatoes, corn, or peas.

The other section should comprise your meat and meat substitute group - meat, fish, poultry, or tofu.

Next, fill half of your plate with non-starchy vegetables. You can place there broccoli, carrots, cucumbers, salad, tomatoes, and cauliflower.

Last, add a glass of milk and a small piece of roll, and eh voila! You are ready to eat.

Tip #4: Reading Food Labels

With food labels, it all comes down to the Nutrition Facts. It's that list of nutrition information found on the package of foods sold in the grocery store. Reading food labels can help you make wise choices about the foods you buy. The labels will tell you what ingredients were used, the amount of calories, and other pertinent information essential to a diabetes patient.

For instance, a typical food label would contain the total amounts per serving for the following nutrients:

• Calories
• Total fat
• Saturated fat
• Cholesterol
• Sodium
• Total carbohydrate
• Fiber

Use the nutrition facts found in food labels to compare similar types of foods and buy the one that contains fewer calories, lower fats, cholesterol, etc.

Pay close attention to free foods like sugar-free gelatin desert, sugar-free ice pops, sugarless gum, diet soft drinks, and sugar-free syrups. Just because they are called "free" does not mean they are entirely free of calories so don't be overconfident. Instead, read the label. Most free foods should have less than 20 calories and 5 grams of carbohydrates per serving.

Another thing, "no-sugar added" means no sugar was added during the manufacture and packaging of the foods. The ingredients do not include sugar. However, the food may be high in carbohydrates still so be sure to read the label carefully.

Fat-free foods could still mean that they contain lots of carbohydrates. Often, they contain almost the same amount of calories as the foods they replace so be sure to pay attention to the label. Buying fat-free foods instead of regular foods does not necessarily mean that you are making a wise choice.

Tip #5: A Word about Sweets
Now, you know that sweets are generally discouraged among diabetes patients. However, having diabetes does not necessarily mean that you cannot have sweets. Imagine how bad life can be for the sweet tooth with diabetes. But as long as you keep your intake of sweets in moderation, there is no reason you have to eschew sugar from your life forever. After all, glucose (sugar) is still the most basic source of energy that the body needs.

So sweeten your foods with these following options:

• Sugar and other sweeteners with calories: honey, brown sugar, molasses, fructose, cane sugar, and confectioners sugar

• Reduced calorie sweeteners: erythritol, hydrogenated starch hydrolysates, isomalt, lactitol, maltitol, mannitol, sorbitol, and xylitol

• Low calories sweeteners: ascelfume potassium, aspartame, saccharin, and sucralose

Research has overturned the long standing belief that sugar caused diabetes. The new studies show us that sugar has in fact the same effect on blood glucose levels as other carbohydrates like bread and potatoes. Based on this discovery, experts agree that a diabetic can now consume sugar as long as they incorporate it into their meal plan the way they would with any ordinary carbohydrate-containing foods.
Now that you have been pointed to the right direction with these tips to improve your diabetes diet, you can go ahead and live a healthier, fuller life where nothing - no carb nor sweets - is denied you, as long as you keep it all in moderation.

Dealing With Juvenile Diabetes

Juvenile Diabetes Cure

Author: Rich jammes

uvenile diabetes is a chronic disorder caused by the body?s inability to manage sugar or glucose and store it properly to be used as fuel. When the body can?t efficiently break down glucose to be absorbed by the cells, it stays in the blood and causes health problems. An estimated one hundred and twenty individuals worldwide have diabetes, of which, approximately 3 percent have juvenile diabetes. It is projected that juvenile diabetes affects one in every 7,000 children per year. More cases reported concern individuals who are less than twenty years old.

Type 1 diabetes and juvenile diabetes are the same. The term juvenile refers to the onset of the disorder which begins in childhood. Children who are diagnosed to have juvenile diabetes depend on insulin to equip their body with the necessary insulin levels to convert food into energy. Research conducted by medical practitioners and scientists indicate that juvenile diabetes is an autoimmune disorder. Autoimmune disorders are characterized by the breakdown of the body?s immune system, which directs the immune response of the body toward fighting its own defenses.

Symptoms in Children

The early signs and symptoms of the disease include:

Juvenile Diabetes Cure

I wanted to take the time to talk to you about the juvenile diabetes cure. This is a horrible problem for people to have and it is twice hard for children to have it. Diabetes is a condition where the body is unable to properly produce insulin or isn't able to properly respond to insulin. A lot of people don't view this as a serious problem. They assume a person just has to check their blood sugar through the day and that's about it. This is a really dangerous problem. Diabetes can lead to blindness and can lead to a person losing their limbs. It is extremely dangerous problem people have. I'm going to share with you the juvenile diabetes cure.

The main culprit of this problem is all the refined sugar that is in our food. It's almost impossible to find something without it. A lot of people like to blame genetics on this problem and genetics probably does, but if people weren't eating the amount of refined sugar to begin with, there wouldn't be a problem. What happens with this sugar is that it causes the insulin in the body to spike and than crash.
