List of Foods for a Diabetic to Eat

Author: willyboy

Firstly I would like to state that I am diabetic and I find it very difficult to create a diabetic diet plan and find foods that are good for me to eat. However after I bought a couple of eBooks and did a lot of research I found the information I was looking for and now I am going to share it with you.

The recommended daily calories for someone with diabetes is usually around 1200-1800 calories and consists of 50%-60% carbohydrates 12%-20% protein and not more than 30% fats. Now that is just a basic outline of what your daily intake should be I will go in to more detail below.

Some must haves for people with diabetes are Alpha-lipoic acid this is like a vitamin and it helps enhance the glucose uptake and improves diabetes nerves damage.

Secondly we have Omega 3 which helps to protect against the hardening of arteries.

The last one I would like to recommend is artificial sweeteners obviously everyone who suffers from diabetes knows that sugar should be kept to a low level in your diabetic diet plan so you can use alternatives such as aspartame and saccharin.

Foods that diabetics should avoid are high fat foods this is a big no no as well as foods with a lot of sodium. As well as this you should restrict the amount of alcohol you intake if you can just do not drink alcohol at all as this can cause health problems like liver damage and increase the risk of heart disease.

Foods for diabetics:

Carbohydrates: Bran, oats, porridge
Fruit: apple, citrus, berries, peaches, pears, plum, and rhubarb.
Vegetables - cabbage, cauliflower, carrots, celery, cucumber, onions, lettuce, olives, peas, pepper spinach, broccoli and tomatoes.

Proteins: Vegetables - beans, lentils, millet, soybeans
Free range chicken and turkey (skinless)
Lean cut of meats - pork, veal, beef and lamb.
Free-ranged chicken eggs.

Fat: Vegetables oils - sesame, soybean, sunflower, Avocados,
Poultry: mackerel, tuna, herrings and salmon.
Unsaturated margarine

Ensuring you know what you should and should not eat if you suffer from diabetes is essential in keeping diabetes under control and having a good diabetic diet plan is part of this.

OASIS C Set for Implementation January 2010

Author: Angela Martin

The OASIS C rollout is planned for January 2010, but the explanatory and training material won’t be available any time soon. The new OASIS will also require you to look back over the episode of care at transfer and discharge. Many agencies have expressed concerns about OASIS C Panel members stressed the following items:

  • Agency burden doesn’t increase much: Just looking at the item count, when you compare the current OASIS with OASIS C, you see very little difference in the number of items, except at transfer. But, the transfer OASIS will take longer and contain more items than the current OASIS B to capture more information for CMS.
  • No impact on payment: The OASIS C impact on payment will be zero. OASIS items used in the payment algorithm were assessed to make sure they were not changed in a way that would affect the payment algorithm, but once OASIS C data are collected, it will be possible to assess whether they could be useful for refinements to the case mix adjustor.
  • Process items are optional: The process measures were added in part to capture care that home health agencies can control. Many agencies already incorporate these in their patient care because they identify patients who are at high risk for problems.

CMS has taken care to ensure that each process item in the latest version of the OASIS C provides an opportunity for clinicians to indicate that a process was not conducted. According to CMS, clinicians have the option of responding that an assessment or intervention was not implemented and the option of documenting in the record any additional information they deem appropriate.

These process items may be used in the future for pay for performance - now called “quality-based purchasing”. Then if agencies decide not to incorporate these evidence-based practices, it could impact future payment.

OASIS C Trainings will make it very important to identify diagnoses early. This is especially true for diabetes, to cue you to ask the questions on the assessment related to diabetes. HHAs also may want a system to add spaces to the referral form to record when a patient received different vaccinations.

    Breast Cancer - Diagnosis,Causes, Symptoms,Treatments,Prognosis

    Author: Dick Aronson

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women affecting one in eight women during their lives. It may develop at any time but the risk of developing it increases as women get older. It is far more common in post-menopausal women and the risk continues to increase with rising age.

    CAUSE
The cause of breast cancer is not known and while it can also occur in men, the much higher occurrence in women implicates estrogen.
Today, breast cancer, like other forms of cancer, is considered to be the final outcome of multiple environmental and hereditary factors.

Breathing secondhand smoke increases breast cancer risk by 70% in younger, primarily pre-menopausal women.
A newly released study indicates a correlation between the drop in breast cancer and the drop in women taking HRT.

    SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS
Breast cancer elicits so many fears, including those relating to surgery, death, loss of body image and loss of sexuality, however it is more easily treated and often curable if it is found early, therefore regular self examination and screening is essential. Breast cancer usually shows as a lump or thickening in the breast tissue, although most breast lumps are not cancerous.

    Certain predisposing factors are clear.
Women at high risk are those who:
Have a family history of breast cancer.
Have long menstrual cycles, began menses early or menopause late.
    Have never been pregnant
Were first pregnant after age 31.
    Have had unilateral breast cancer.
    Have endometrial or Ovarian cancer.
Were exposed to low level ionizing radiation.
Many other possible factors are still under investigation including, obesity, alcohol and environmental factors.

Those with lower risk include women who:
    Were pregnant before age 20.
    Have had multiple pregnancies.
    Are native American or Asian.

Breast cancer occurs more often in the left breast and in the upper quadrant.
Indications of breast cancer other than a lump may include changes in breast size or shape, skin dimpling, nipple inversion, or spontaneous single-nipple discharge.

    TYPES
When breast cancer cells invade the dermal lymphatics, small lymph vessels in the skin of the breast, its presentation can resemble skin inflammation and thus is known as inflammatory breast cancer (IBC). Symptoms of inflammatory breast cancer include pain, swelling, warmth and redness throughout the breast, as well as an orange peel texture to the skin referred to as peau d'orange.

The most common pathologic types of breast cancer are invasive ductal carcinoma, malignant cancer in the breast's ducts, and invasive lobular carcinoma, malignant cancer in the breast's lobules.
Occasionally, breast cancer presents as metastatic disease, that is, cancer that has spread beyond the original organ. Bone or joint pains can sometimes be manifestations of metastatic breast cancer, as can jaundice or neurological symptoms.

    TREATMENT
Much controversy still exists over treatment of breast cancer, options include; Surgery , chemotherapy, Radiotherapy,Hormonal therapies,Herceptin and complementary treatments.

The mainstay of breast cancer treatment is surgery when the tumor is localized, with possible adjuvant hormonal therapy (with tamoxifen or an aromatase inhibitor), chemotherapy, and/or radiotherapy.

In February 2007, the MammaPrint test became the first breast cancer predictor to win formal approval from the Food and Drug Administration. This is a new gene test to help predict whether women with early-stage breast cancer will relapse in 5 or 10 years, this could help influence how aggressively the initial tumor is treated.

Interstitial laser thermotherapy (ILT) is an innovative method of treating breast cancer in a minimally invasive manner and without the need for surgical removal, and with the absence of any adverse effect on the health and survival of the patient during intermediate follow up.

    PREVENTION
Routine (annual) mammography of women older than age 40 or 50 is recommended by numerous organizations as a screening method to diagnose early breast cancer and has demonstrated a protective effect in multiple clinical trials.
Women with one or more first-degree relatives (mother, sister, daughter) with premenopausal breast cancer should begin screening at an earlier age.

    PROGNOSIS
There are many prognostic factors associated with breast cancer: staging, tumour size and location, grade, whether disease is systemic (has metastasized, or traveled to other parts of the body), recurrence of the disease, and age of patient.

With advances in screening, diagnosis, and treatment, the death rate for breast cancer has declined by about 20% over the past decade, and research is ongoing to develop even more effective screening and treatment programs.

Diet Or Regular Soft Drinks, Which Do You Prefer?

    Author: Faye Bautista

They are joining the lowly ranks of candy and sugary sweets. Some researchers even warn against diet soda, claiming it could lead to a loss of calcium. And of course, 'regular' soda is being blamed for contributing to weight gain and diabetes.

Then, with regards to association with heart disease, it doesn't matter which one you chose, both are linked to increased risk of heart disease and developing metabolic syndrome.

Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of cardiovascular disease and diabetes risk factors including excess waist circumference, high blood pressure, elevated triglycerides, low levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL "good" cholesterol) and high fasting glucose levels -- three or more of which, increases a person's risk of developing diabetes and cardiovascular disease. It also increases the risk of heart disease by two to four times that than the normal population and increases the risk of type-2 diabetes by nine to 30 times, not to mention its detrimental effects to the kidneys, liver, ovaries, a person's ability to sleep and even dementia.

According to statistics, metabolic syndrome affects up to 30 percent of the industrialized world's population, and is expected to affect 50 to 75 million Americans by the year 2010.

As reported by the Framingham researchers in Circulation: Journal of the American Heart Association, drinking one or more soft drink daily (whether regular or diet) may increase the risk factors for heart disease, among others:
    - 31 percent greater risk of developing new-onset obesity (defined as a body mass index [BMI] of 30 kilograms/meter2 or more);
    - 30 percent increased risk of developing increased waist circumference;
    - 25 percent increased risk of developing high blood triglycerides or high fasting blood glucose;
    - 32 percent higher risk of having low HDL levels.

A trend towards an increased risk of developing high blood pressure that was not statistically significant. According to Ravi Dhingra, M.D., lead author of the study and an instructor in medicine at Harvard Medical School: "Moderation in anything is the key. If you are drinking one or more soft drinks a day, you may be increasing your risk of developing metabolic risk factors for heart disease."

For those who already have diabetes, soft drinks are double trouble anyway. What with all that sugar content!

Also, According to Ramachandran Vasan, M.D., senior author of the Framingham Heart Study and professor of medicine at Boston University School of Medicine: One explanation is that the fructose corn syrup in regular soft drinks causes weight gain, and can lead to insulin resistance and diabetes. But then you would expect to see an association with regular soft drinks, but not diet soft drinks.

Our findings suggest that this is not the case. Another possible explanation is that consuming more liquids is associated with a lesser degree of dietary compensation. However, the researchers admit that these results need to be replicated in further studies before recommendations can be made.

What are the First Signs and Symptoms of Diabetes Type 2 - the Likely Causes of Diabetes Type 2

    Author: willyboy

There are many different causes for diabetes both diabetes type 1 and type 2 it is important that you notice the first signs of diabetes. Diabetes is a condition which is caused through not enough insulin being produced by the human body this then causes a high level of glucose in the blood. I am going to explain both the causes and signs of diabetes in both type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes.Type 1 diabetes is usually developed in young children or young adults, it usually develops quickly as the pancreas stops producing insulin type 1 diabetes is then treated with insulin shots however a healthy diet including a diabetic diet plan, exercise and managing your weight are all great strategies for controlling your diabetes whether it is type 1 or type 2 diabetes. The causes of type 1 diabetes are thought to be from an auto immune disease this is basically the human body trying to protect its self against other parts of the body. The human body produces antibodies which attach them selves to the beta cells in the pancreas. The antibodies are thought to be destroying the cells which produce the insulin in the pancreas and therefore have an effect on the rate at which the body produces the insulin. The causes of diabetes type 2 are increased development of glucose in the liver, insulin abnormalities, genes and the environment. There are many other causes such as obesity, old age, heredity conditions and also alcoholism which can play a role in the occurrence of diabetes.

New Advances In Diabetes - Detection And Treatment

    Author: Faye Bautista

The ADA 67th Scientific Sessions in Chicago started today and there has been a noisy buzz on everything diabetes. However, what got my interest more is the research development on oral insulin. The Type 1 diabetics are dependent on insulin. While the type 2 diabetics do not, still at a later stage, they will insulin as well. At the moment, insulin is only available by injection. Of course there are ongoing trials and investigation on oral insulin, but as far as I know, there is nothing approved in the market yet, and everything is still investigational. Here are a few recent lead stories I got on oral insulin:

'Insulin pill" hope for diabetes - a UK company, Diabetology and Cardiff University experts may have solved the previous setback on oral insulin with their capsules' special coating that protects the drug from acids in the stomach, which will allow it to pass into the small intestine where it is absorbed.

Capsules against diabetes - Biotechnologists at The Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) have developed a new type of alginate capsule -called TAM (the Trondheim Alginate Microcapsule) - that could solve the problem of the body's immune system recognizing and attacking alien, implanted insulin cells. The say that the gel capsule is designed with a view to camouflage the insulin-producing cells to the body's immune system.

Also, since the type 2 diabetes is characterized by being insensitive to insulin leading to high sugar levels, a leading a team of researchers from Ohio University, Athens (led by John Kopchick) to believe that the condition can alter the abundance of various skin proteins, which thereby makes the skin a possible alternative in diagnosing type 2 diabetes. Kopchick and his colleagues decided to see whether they could detect protein changes in the skin of mice that are specially bred to gain weight and develop diabetes when fed fatty food. The results, although may potentially diagnose diabetes through the skin, are still being studied further whether the changes in skin protein biomarkers are due to diabetes alone and not obesity - since obesity is usually a precursor of type 2 diabetes.

However, if the study proved to be successful in human, we are looking at a future of a dermal diagnostic tool that will detect type 2 diabetes even before the symptoms appear. This method can also have possible applications in other serious diseases.
